The tailboom carries what seems to be a double set of wheels. They are higher than the tail rotor, so if they cannot reach the ground, what is their purpose? Any body an idea?

longer ron 4th June 2026 08:47

Slot in wheels for ground handling ?
Maybe just a handy place to carry them - and maybe help with the CofG a little bit ?

Edit:
Apologies that i jump the queue. I mixed up the 2 threads!
I think Euro340 will need to reach 10 posts begore he can post photo challenges.
As intermezzo:

I have extracted a list of Name that Flying machine challenges with help of Co-pilot (AI).
Most work is the checking required. I am now at 2/3 of the 670-700 Challenges.
Very little photos of challenges have gone missing since 2019 , but this is one of them:

Thank you Noyade. I can see how to post images but from what is mentioned it seems I have to reach 10 posts - so 8 to go (counting this as no 2)!
Cheers.

The link to Wiki in Noyade's post 5948 clearly shows the wheels attached to lugs on the skids which are visible in the pic in that post.

What intrigues me far more is the small weights(?) hanging from the servo-paddles or whatever they're called in the same Wiki pic. Never seen that before. Anyone able to explain?

Is it the Avro 529 Aldershot?

washoutt 5th June 2026 13:02

Those weights are indeed intriguing. Never seen something like that before. The wheel at the boom remain a mystery. I cannot see them on the picture of Wiki.

meleagertoo 5th June 2026 14:04

I've just explained the wheels Washoutt!

sandringham1 5th June 2026 20:34

On RotorWay Exec helicopters you have to fit an 11.3kg balance weight to the aft end of one landing skid when flying two up, then move it to the front when solo to keep within the CofG in limits, those little wheels probably served a similar purpose as balance weights as well as ground handling wheels. What the weights on strings were for I have no idea.

Do keep up guys - see my post No 5950 ;)

Very good Euro340 the AVRO 529 Aldershot it is!

We just have to wait till your post count had gone up before you can post your own challenges.
I assume you will call Open House on this one?

What I meant, M-too, was that on the Wikipedia colour pic that you referenced,, the wheels on the boom are not to be seen. But I think Longeron makes sense.
