Winkie gets a statue
The pigeon that saved lives in WWII gets a statue
A new statue has been unveiled in Dundee to honour a pigeon who became a World War Two heroine. Winkie was one of the first ever recipients of the Dickin medal, for animals that displayed conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving the Armed Forces. She received the medal for her role in the rescue of aircrew that crashed in the North Sea in 1942. The bronze statue is part of a new development of flood defences beside the river Tay and sits on the floodgates in Beach Crescent. |
I thought for a second it was for Eric Winkle-Brown! He deserves one, that's for sure. That said, the recipient Winkie seems to have deserved the recognition for bravery.

it's in Edinburgh, appropriately |
Thanks for the info chaps. Last time at the airport was 2016, so I was a bit early.
It's the city the adopted Eric grew up, born in Hackney to a single Mother. |

Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown’s statue (life sized, about the same height and build as me, ie, not big!) is outside Edinburgh Airport by the metro terminal.
