BEA/Ba Flight Manual question

I understand that BEA had an exemption from the CAA which meant that they did not carry the Aircraft flight manual onboard. Can anybody confirm this and if so did it apply in Ba too?

Thank you in advance.

Don’t know about an exemption but the Trident had a ships library drawer under P3 station with all the manuals in. 1971-1978. (ARB - CAA). Would be surprised if it wasn’t mandatory but then who am I to know the thinking of those in charge especially after the Staines inquiry where the Fleet training manager stated that he had special permission over the telephone to let us fly P2 only contradicting the licensing officer who stated that no such authorisation existed nor had authorisation ever been given purely on the phone.

Air Europe 737 late 80s: AFM carried.
By the time they went bust in 91 I believe we had an exemption not to have to carry them.
After that, Air U.K. Leisure 737, and BA 747, A320 and 787: never carried them.

Thank you for the replies.

Blind pew, fascinating the whole Papa India story is a very murky rabbit hole. I found your book fascinating.

eckhard, Thanks that goes a long way to confirming what I been told. We certainly carried the FM on the older British types I operated with the independent operators many moons ago.

did it apply in BA too?
No - full library on all types I flew up until EFB was intoduced. Even had to delay the very first flight of a brand new 757 as no paperwork, manuals or anything on board when it was dragged across from TBA :hmm:

Thanks brown, watching a spy drama based on a true story (Alexander Wilson) with my cousin and explained the disappearing records of the Trident that ended up in Manchester with a viable bomb on board and how I had inadvertently been sent an internal email as to how I might get release shortly afterwards to be told to delete it. When the 40 years non release period expired I applied for it again to be told that there was no record of it.
wrt onboard manuals seem to remember that the clowns who decided to fly back to LHR from LAX after an engine stall and shutdown then miss managed the fuel because some bright spark had changed the cross feeding checklist to use the jettison pumps did have the manuals on board which if they had read and understood them would have avoided declaring a mayday.

B...dhc , like everything in aviation ..it's not a black and white answer .
I started in '73 on BEA Tridents , the Flight Manual [ and lots of 1 mil topos] were carried .
Some time before Dec '85 , permission was given to leave the very heavy Flight Manual in BA records office . They are individual a/c specific , much like light a/cs POH.
ETOPs , the FLYING Manual is not the same as Flight Man.. and yes a full complement of paper manuals was on board when I retired in '09 .
Individual memory sticks had just been issued with manuals on them .

Ahh yes Condor I recall various Topo's being part of the ships library. I have a couple with Autair stamps. I've a couple of Flight manuals, One for a Hermes, the other a Brit 312. Both are airframe specific rather than the "specimen" editions.

Thanks Pew another interesting tale of murky goings on.

I knew a BOAC Flight engineer (VC10) who used to bemoan the fact he had to carry his copy of the Flying manual technical on every trip. Reckoned his right arm was Three inches longer!

Talk of Ship's Library - I'd just done some amendments for this 'ere Autair Herald. Do you know just prior to this I had been a Duty Ops Officer with 2 stripes ? Then several types from the soon to be defunct British Eagle were employed to reorganise 'Ground Services' at Autair/Court Line and I found myself re-graded as something I've never heard of.

A slight disenchantment with the Company resulted..............

OUAQ... never mind the 'nuniform , did you get a pay rise , or pay cut ?

rgds condor .

OUAQUKGF Ops 29th Mar 2023 16:08

I think it was a small rise. I received this missive a couple of weeks after receiving a very nice letter of thanks from the Managing Director for dealing with the aftermath of a nasty crash which had occurred on my shift. Swings and Roundabouts !
