VX185, one of the prototype Canberras

longer ron 23rd Jan 2022 15:46

Doubtful Possel as VX185 would have been built by/for English Electric.

BAC formed = 1960
Canberra VX185 completed circa 1951

I read
serial VW 15
part 401
drg EM2 870121
What kind of part are we looking at?

dixi188 23rd Jan 2022 17:16

Could be an EE Canberra.
The BAC plate could be a later fitment at overhaul/refurbish. It looks newer than the background material.
Could the drawing number be : EM = English Electric Military ?
The inspection stamp appears to be V487 which would be a Vickers no. I think my fathers no. was V881 but he didn't work on canberras.

If the OP cared to provide some information on the provenance of the photo, that might help.

longer ron 23rd Jan 2022 18:56

I believe that VX185 had been WFU in 1959 (ie before BAC was formed)
Canberra numbers were usually EA2,EA3 etc
EE insp Stamps were usually EEP although Canberras were also built by Avro,HP and Shorts.
Samlesbury was also a big production centre - did they use EEP insp stamps as well ?

VW15 = Vickers Weybridge 15 ??
Or posssibly Vickers Wisley - although I do not think they actually did much production work at Wisley.

Do you have any other pictures to give an all round view of the item ?
And perhaps some dimensions ?

longer ron 24th Jan 2022 09:16

Looks like a camera port/window,is it part of a recce pod ?

dixi188 28th Jan 2022 20:08

It's gone very quiet. Any more clues?

DaveReidUK 28th Jan 2022 20:25

The OP seems very reluctant to disclose where and when the photos were taken.

GBOAA 29th Jan 2022 07:43

I don't have anymore photos. The item was listed for sale and I wanted to try and find out more before a possible purchase.

longer ron 29th Jan 2022 08:17

Part of a Recce Pod showing a camera port/window was all I could come up with.
BAC did make a recce pod for Saudi Lightnings (mounted in the front of the belly tank),not sure if they built the structural parts of the Jaguar Pod,I guess the actual paint colour might give clues.
What was it advertised as ??

longer ron 29th Jan 2022 09:52

Difficult to make a good guess without dimensions etc.
But I see that the BAC Strikey (Strikemaster) also had a camera pod available, although I have not seen a close up of the pod.

It seems to be about the right diameter for a Lightning, but it doesn't look much like the photos I've seen of the Saudi recce pod.

I agree Dave - I just mentioned it as a later camera pod seemed to develop out of the Lightning pod.And also as confirmation that BAC did have 'previous' for building at least some recce pods.
The Green colour might point more to Jag/Strikey or similar anyway ?
Most of the later pods were quite a bit bigger, but some of the early pods were more like small drop tank dia - in fact some were partly modified drop tanks .

I managed to get another photo.
