Anthony (Tony) Haig Thomas - a son of David Haig Thomas wrote a jolly good book about his (Tony's) RAF flying days. Not sure the title is repeatable here........

Using great circle mapper with a range from Rea point and a range from Sachs harbor on Banks Island. Then I found Isachsen but still had to correct for the difference between north eastern point of Banks Islands and south western Sachs harbour.

But I couldn’t find anything on Haigh-Thomas which resembles an air strip?

Now this:
Not so much H&N

(Church Parade;) `Fall Out R C`s and J**s.`
I did a `sort of` proof read of the original,which was going to be called,possibly,` Life and times of a 3* Flying Officer`.
The `3* `is a reference to what was/is.? the Officers Annual Confidential Report; A`star` annotation is made on the `cover` to higher Authority that `here comes `trouble`,probably in`red`,.so to get 3 may have been a record...
OTOH,with suitable `direction`,he could possibly have ended up as the `other` kind of 3 star...

St Helena I think - that rock outcrop behind the tower is pretty distinctive!

Yes pretty distinctive but you have to look at the right location first.
Over to Asturias.

Asturias56 31st Mar 2024 09:21

It rang a bell - there was a long discussion with lots of photographs on ST Helena on here a few years back. And those of us who look art rocks know there are a limited number of places where you'll get that sort of outcrop. My first thought was the Faeroes TBH

Try this one - no trees, no lights no waste bins I'm afraid

Gee thanks, but are those thistles? Scotland? Got a photo with more weeds?

Grass looks too short to be a prairie. Too much poles/sticks planted. Therefore I guess Europe?

Asturias56 1st Apr 2024 08:11

Its pretty dry Bear - its definitely not Europe. Don't believe there is any scheduled service

Asturias56 4th Apr 2024 18:02

It is not in Australia

Asturias56 6th Apr 2024 12:43

No - but getting warm - you're too far south

This place has been written about - although the airfield has a different name to the one you might recognise................

Ricks'!!!

Stretching it a bit to call it a terminal but you've found it - name it and it's all yours!

A local historical person to fill in the time

Is that Sitting Bull?
Pine Ridge Airport: KIEN or (dyslexically) XPR. The only other US airport I can think of that does that is PHOG/OGG.

Asturias56 7th Apr 2024 13:09

Pine Ridge it is - close to Wounded Knee. The gent in the snappy gear is Mahpiya Wakan ("Medicine Cloud") - an Oglala Sioux. Sitting Bull was a Hunkpapa Sioux. The place is a fully fledged dump - really appalling problems

The 2010 U.S. Census counted 18,834 individuals living on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The vast majority (16,906) identified as American Indian.
  • 89% of residents are unemployed;
  • 53.75% of the residents live below the Federal poverty level
  • Average per capita income in Oglala Lakota County is $8,768 and ranks as the "poorest" county in the nation.
  • The infant mortality rate is five times higher than the national average;
  • Native American amputation rates due to diabetes are three to four times higher than the national average;
  • Death rate due to diabetes is three times higher than the national average;
  • Teen suicide is four times the national average; and
  • Average life expectancy on Pine Ridge is 66.81 years, the lowest in the United States. Other statistics, attributed to the Pine Ridge hospital, cite an average life expectancy of just 47 years for men and 55 years for women.

I'd rather hoped Bear would get it - Frank Standing Bear aka Frank Grouard was a very interesting character around these parts in the late 19th Century..........

thnarg 7th Apr 2024 14:28

Apologies if I stepped on Bear’s paws, A56. Yeah the Lakota people have had a tough few centuries for various reasons. If wikipedia is reliable the current tribal council president’s name translates as Frank Star Comes Out.

It’s probably featured before but it’s Sunday afternoon and I can’t be arsed to check the spreadsheet:

OH if correct

thnarg 8th Apr 2024 16:18

Sometimes we need an easy one and not just sheds and trees, Asty. YWG it is, an airport not easy to spot from over the US border…

If I understand Thnarg correctly it is a picture from USA with Winnipeg airport in view.
Then the photo must have been taken from the direction of Badger Minnesota.
The diagonal feature is then the Whitney lake ditch.
