Random Pictures Grandpa took (Yes, he was German)

Here I found a bunch of pictures my grandpa took back in the days.
Unfortunately I have no idea when or where they have been taken. I just thought they might be of interest to some of you.
I just took them off the originals with my cell phone, so quality is not the best

Great pics! I too have a German grandfather (the clue's in the name) but no pics to share, unfortunately. He served in WW1 but was already too old for WW2.
Also had an great-uncle who was a general in the wehrmacht and another cousin-once-removed who was a u-boot captain. After the war, he rose to the rank of admiral in the Kriegsmarine and had use of a Wessex at Portsmouth! We visited him sometime in the sixties when he was there, presumably on some sort of NATO detachment.
Another uncle deserted from the eastern front and became a successful German diplomat in the Lebanon, USA and Canada. I only wish I had quizzed them more while they were still around!

Interesting photographs indeed , thank you for sharing them . I cannot be sure of course but some of the locations have an “ eastern “ feel to them ,purely based on the scenery and the general background .

Did your Grandfather spend some time on the eastern front, Poland , Ukraine or Russia perhaps ?

The only recognizable feature are indeed the 2 round windows

Jack D, in deed. As far as I know, he started out in France but eventually was sent to the East Front. He came home from POW from the Soviet Union years after the war ended. He died when I was 3, so I couldn't really talk to him about it.

The downed Fairey Battle QT-L is L5200 of 142 Squadron which was destroyed in combat on the 11 June 1940 as part of the light bomber element of the Advanced Air Striking Force , some details here ; https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/22354 .

Interesting...the photos of the Battle wreck look more like a forced landing rather than the narrative of the pilot having baled out?

megan 19th Mar 2021 04:24

Aircraft can do strange things after the occupant has departed, the first is a F-106 that the pilot ejected from while in a unrecoverable spin, minimal damage, repaired and flew again, resides in a museum, the second a Mirage that the pilot ejected from after an engine failure in the circuit, most damage was incurred during the recovery, resides in a museum..

Goes back to the WW1 when an RE8 landed with both of the crew dead.

Wow, those are great photos! The Do-X one must be quite a rarity. Thank you for posting them, Would you mind if I share these (with credit, of course) to a modelling group on Facebook? I know the folks there would be fascinated.

Thanks

Looks right...kept his history quiet except when he was dying slowly of C. Talked about France during the Battle of the Bulge along the narrow muddy roads and his foot being stuck in a rotting corpse, horses blown up the size of elephants and popping..liberation of Ghent twice and Belsen. Silent hero.

Max Tow 21st Mar 2021 10:53

Ditto my Grandfather. In my experience, most who experienced the horrors of war are reluctant to let the memories out.
