B-17 engine evolution
Dear Fellows,
I'm busy making a 1/32 model of the B-17 Flying fortress. Waiting that paint is dry, i'm busy to read about this bomber, something is not clear for me. from what I read, the B-17 was equipped with engine Wright R-1820 cyclone as summarized here under:: The Y1B17 with R-1820-32 The B-17B with R-1820- (I don't know the version) The B-17C with R-1820- (I don't know the version) The B-17D with R-1820- (I don't know the version) The B-17E with R-1820-65 The B-17,F and G with the R-1820-97 What i'm interested to know is what changes has been introduced between each version of the R-1820-32,-65, -97 As well I saw a engine R-1820 -G2 for the B-17G...is it the R-1820 97 ? I read as well that certain engines were equipped with a turbocharger from General electric...if fellows can have the patience to tell me more about that... Thanks in advance Philippe |
The spec sheets at AEHS Home list the following variants:
R-1820-51: YB-17A, B-17B, B-17C, B-17D R-1820-65: B-17C, B-17D, B-17E, B-17F, B-17G R-1820-91: B-17E R-1820-93: B-17H R-1820-97: B-17F, B-17G, B-17H Designations such as R-1820-G2 are the manufacturer's series, not the military one. The R-1820-97 was the Wright R-1820-G666A, for example. |

Might be 'cos Phigla is a new member - think some PPRuNe functions only kick in after 10 posts or something...

Knowing that the B-17 s/n 42-31585 "Mount N Ride" has been interned by the Swiss Airforce, is it somewhere a tool to know what happened to it in Swiss?
As well, knowing that the B-17 Mount N Ride was part of the production block B-17G-20-BO: 42-31432 to 42-31631 ( info from internet) is it a tool to trace the history of that aircraft 42-31585. In other words is it a tool to access to the log-book of it and as well to the crew log-book. Difficult question. |
Only info to hand.
42-31585 (323rd BS, 91st BG, *Mount'n Ride*) in emergency landing at Dudendorf, Switzerland after flak hit Mar 16, 1944 and interned. MACR 3221. Returned to UK at end of war and scrapped Oct 8, 1945. |
Dear Fellows,
Thanks to you, for the information sent, I make some slow progress about it. Because the mailbox limitation to ONE message received or sent i'm a bit limited. Please, if possible and not to boring, use email Thanks Best Regards Philippe Best regards |
Dear Fellows,
I have another trivial question For the prototype Model 299 it was 9 crews, for the B-17F and G it was 10 cews For the Y1B17 I read 6 crews My question is" what is the number of crew and function for the Model 299, Y1B17, Y1B19A, B-17-B, B-17C, Thanks in advance |
