Isn my time (mid 80s) they didn't wear a crest. They only had reg, roundel and a single letter just forward of the engine intake.

The CATCS Provosts wore that crest above on their tail fins during the 1960s.

Thought Marshalls used Vampire T11s into the early 1970s. I was on 15cse and I flew in a T11 in 1969. I was detached to Shawbury in 1971(?) and they were then using Jet Provost Mk3 if I remember correctly.

I was also on an ATC course at Shawbury in 1971 and there were no Vampires active then, all had been replaced by Jet Provosts. The last Vampires were retired in early 1970.

I took this photo at Biggin Hill in 1954 of Boulton Paul Balliol T2, serial Number WG180 based at Middle Wallop.

It was taken during the 1954 Royal Observer Corps 'Recognition Day' that was held annually at Biggin Hill when a variety of RAF, RN and USAF aircraft were flown in so members of the Royal Observer Corps could see up close the friendly aircraft they were expected to recognise in the air.

This aircraft was from 288 Sqn at Middle Wallop whose Balliols provided target aircraft for training all-weather fighter crews using Brigands of No.228 OCU at Colerne and also for the training of student Fighter Controllers at the Fighter Command Control and Reporting School also at Middle Wallop.

That's how they did it back then.

CATCS Vampire
 

After some further online searching I found a colour photograph of a CATCS DH Vampire T11 (XH274) taken at Valley in 1968. It shows the crest (as above in post #2) on the fuselage just below the canopy and next to the red ejection seat warning triangle.

An exceedingly young FW as an Observer in the mid-60s at Shawbury. You can just see the CATCS crest under the cockpit side. Twas a dreadfully long time ago! FW
