RAF publicity film on Cyprus (1991)
Things had certainly changed since my tour 1965-67 when the strength was around 12,000 with several resident squadrons (Hastings, Javelins, Lightnings, Canberras, etc) and lots of visiting aircraft |
A few shots of Kyrenia taken January 1971

Aaah. In picture one, the RAF Albacores would be just off the bottom of the picture, (and in the centre of picture two), and the bar for the brandy sours was on the street across the harbour, about far left.
A wonderful three month detachment, and at the end of it a (UN) medal. Daft. |
What was the name of the Bar we used downtown Nicosia prior to the
Green Line introduction? One abiding memory there, was hearing via a radio,I think, of President Kennedy's assassination during the evening 22 November 1963. A popular Bar which became off limits the following year. |
Could it have been the Key club?

Some lovely shots there. Such a pity they can't get along.

What was the name of the Bar we used downtown Nicosia prior to the Green Line introduction? I must admit we had some very good crew p*ss ups there and the staff were alway very friendly with generous offerings of the local Grappa they called the heart of the vine. Nicos Sampson |
I really like this painting and would like permission to use it in a book I am working on: a history of the Anglican Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf. The relevance is that the first bishop lived at RAF Nicosia, having just retired after 45 RAF service.
