Penshurst, Kent - wartime emergency landing ground

I was a school boy in Tonbridge during 1941 to 1945. Occasionally saw USAAF B17 Flying Fortresses and Liberators returning from raids over Occupied Europe and crash landing at Penshurst which in those days was a diversion emergency landing ground. We used to cycle from Tonbridge to Penshurst and American guards sometimes would let us wander over and inspect these aircraft.

All these years later, I wondered how many aircraft crash landed at Penshurst during the war. Was Penshurst an RAF base in those days? if so, what aircraft operated from there? Were there any books written about Penshurst wartime operations?

Do a Google search - there's a good write up of Penshurst on Wikipedia.
