Talking Pictures TV
Those who could be described as 'somdel stape in age', to use a Chaucerian phrase, might like to keep an eye on the schedules of 'Talking Pictures TV', a film channel recently started on UK's Freeview Ch 81 (you'll need an HD receiver due to the transmission system used) or Sky 343.
Some good old B&W and 1950's films; I've just been watching 'Conflict of Wings' (yet again) - filmed mostly at pre-pongo Leconfield. Last night they showed 'Albert RN'. Beats the heck out of 'mainstream' TV cr@p such as 'Strictly Come Dancing'...:yuk: |
Cheers, will look out for that! British films are becoming increasingly rare on most TV channels and I get so bored of American ones!
|
Slight thread drift....but
The American PBS Channel will be available on Freesat Channel 160 wef next weekend |
Any chance of it on Freeview do you know?
|
Channel 81 on freeview.
Great channel and I am hooked on it. Saw a film last week with plenty of hangar shots of Bristol Freighters. |

Great channel and I am hooked on it. Saw a film last week with plenty of hangar shots of Bristol Freighters. Amazing how the hero and his female side-kick could just wander around airside in those days! Edit: * I was probably right first time, Northolt. Internet says BEA only did Viking crew training from Blackbushe. |
Quite recently they also showed "The Big Lift"..about the Berlin airlift. A few actors and lots of service personnel...probably the best window onto "how it was" I've seen.
|
Watched the film called Iron Maiden last week staring a Handley Page Victor Bomber with the airfield shots taken at Radlett.
The Victor was supposed to be a supersonic passenger aircraft. Oh and there was a traction engine also in the film. |
Spekesoftly - thanks, I was going to ask about Freesat

I'm late in catching on to the TPTV channel, but it's provided much comforting nostalgia in this current era - which, particularly in the past three years, makes very little sense to a 'baby boomer' like me.
Highly recommended, if only for the cars and trains! |
Now available if you only have an SD tuner too still on Freeview 81.
|
There was a documentary on here a week or two ago filmed in the 60’s all about Heathrow.

I wish it was October and not nearly April! My SKY+ recorder is full of black and white English films for a rainy afternoon.:)

Last night's film 'House of Secrets' contained quite a number of airport shots... Air France Viscounts, PAA DC7 etc.
There was a glimpse of a strange aircraft supposedly at Marseille... twin finned with plenty of dihedral on the tailplane. Anyone know what it was? |

That sort of layout but from the brief glimpse it looked bigger. I'd need to see it again to be sure.
|
Martin Marlin flying boat?
|
SE.161 Languedoc? Not that much dihedral mind you...

TPTV has shown some real gems over the last 12 months like 'The Man in the Sky', 'The Crowded Sky', 'Cone of Silence' and 'The Sound Barrier', plus I've seen other films where short sequences were filmed at places like 1950s Blackbushe with aircraft like Hermes and Tudors parked around it.
