The photo of the Morton Heron brings back memories when I was with Jersey Airlines at Croydon c 1957 when a Morton Dove or Heron had a failed under carriage incident whereby it circled the field to burn up fuel prior to landing with either its port or starboard wheel hung up. By this time word had spread and a large crowd of airport workers had gathered. The a/c came in to make a perfect landing on just two wheels with the wing tip only touching the grass when almost at standstill. The only casualty occurred when as the a/c came to a stop two police cars dashed forward, resulting in one crashing into the other, and some very red sheep-like police faces !

I went to the 1980 Amy Johnson anniversary event wearing a Press hat so was airside.
Here is a selection of the slides I took.
I remember it was a very very cold day.
It was the only time I ever left an event early due to the cold.

Croydon Airport
 
Lovely photos of the fly-in, shame that by that time new housing shows in the background. In the early 1950's the Airport was a fascinating place to visit as an enthusiast with often unusual or rarely seen visiting aircraft from the continent, which one seldom saw elsewhere. I often used to cycle from Heston where I lived and managed to get round seeing some of these in the hangars, but only managed to take a few photos of which these are a couple. http://s.914.photobucket.com[/IMG]

Use something like Photo and image hosting, free photo galleries, photo editing and register as a user.
Click on Editor (top of page)
Drag thumbnail picture into editor window
Click upload
Click on resize and select 850 by 850 or smaller.
Apply
Save
Click on photo
Click on IMG which will copy the image
Go to the Prune message window, right click and select paste

In the future your settings will be remembered so you won't need to select Editor.

The Mexican Viking and others
 
Excuse the resurrection of this thread, but as a young lad glued to the fence in Forresters Drive, I always wondered what happened to the Mexican Viking that sat out side the Air Couriers hanger for ages. It took off eventually East to west over Wallington. There was also a yellow Beech 17 plus the Lambert Trust's Sealand JKL ? together with a cream and green Lockheed 12, GTL ? that flew over the house fairly regularly. The Arrow Active now resident in Breighton was a resident as well together with a Shorts Scion. I saw the Herald come to clear customs, I cant remember if it was the 4 piston version or the twin dart, but it was a Saturday morning. The excitement when Bev Snook's V tail Bonanza appeared cleared the playground over lunch as did a Belgian American Twin OO FUN . The afternoon the load of Tiger Moths for Rollasons refurbishment programme appeared enlivened a very dull French class, were they only £50 ponds a piece ? Anyway excuse the ramblings I know I should get out more Alan

Great thread! I have had a ride in G-ACDC at Headcorn, now silver and burgundy. My Heinkel-Trojan bubblecar was made at the Trojan works near the aerodrome.

I always wondered what happened to the Mexican Viking that sat out side the Air Couriers hanger for ages.
Restored to the UK register, then to Germany and finally Austria. Broken up at Vienna in 1969.

I read somewhere years ago (Tiger Moth history?) that a Luton Flying Club Tiger was the last aircraft to land at Croydon sometime after the airfield had closed.

I too spent time on Foresters Drive playground after school. What a place Croydon was - Burmese Air Force Provosts, Iran AF Dak, several Catalinas and all and all..

I wonder if anyone has a log for 9 July, 1957 when there was a "fly in" of Czech light aircraft? I saw them from where I lived but could not read all of them.

Airways Aero Association/Airways Flying Club/Croydon
 
Hi, amashamed to admit that I have only just stumbled on PPRuNe after a lifetime involved in Aviation. Started with Airways Aero Association when I was a teenager at school and cycled to Denham each weekend where I kept flight sheets for them and cleaned aeroplanes when not busy!. The trainers then were Miles Magisters (or Hawk Trainer 3) and I was rewarded with occasional flights in a Maggi and had many flights in Private Owners machines.

I the joined BEA as a radio apprentice - mainly so that I could fly with their Club, which by then was operating from Croydon with a very smart fleet of Chipmunks, which were lined up for DI's every morning in front of the terminal building. I think that WgCom. Wenman was the CFI and most of my flying was with Budge (Burridge). My first solo was there but operations were then moved to Biggin Hill (the aircraft were ferried over from Croydon each morning and returned at the end of the days flying). The other flying club there at the time was the Surrey and Kent. Eventually the Club moved to White Waltham and the Chipmunks were replaced by Aiglets. The next move was to Booker and a fleet change to Pa28s fo a few years, before the tomahawks arrived. I did my Instructor Course with Joan Hughes, which was a most enjoyable and memorable experience. Has anyone produced a history of the Club?

Yes, I have produced a PowerPoint presentation which I shall be giving to the "Joystick Club" at White Waltham airfield on Monday, 13th April in the evening. This is an amalgamation of historic photos, text and documents from the original AAA archive collection of over 65 years in existence, until quite recently. I was surprised however to read that the organisation
ferried to aircraft over to Biggin Hill from Croydon and back at the start and end of the day, after the Airport closed, since any documentation was missing on this move also for White Waltham, so you may well be able to help fill in a couple of gaps here.

Roy Lockwood's 1934 short film 'Airport' features Croydon Airport & associated goings-on over a day. Covering flights, people & maintenance, it's a nice piece of history. Health & Safety rules have been tightened since then!

The AAA had a Chipmunk Mk.22 G-APOY added to their fleet I believe shortly before they had to move from Croydon (Registered 11.9.58 - 08.6.64) so presumably this would have been in operation also at Biggin Hill for a short time before it moved to White Waltham between 1959 and 1965. Perhaps Briani can give impart some more information here. Obviously many of the earlier fleet would have been sold by now.
