Dar es Salaam c1948

Apologies for photo quality

This photo is dated about 1948 at Dar es Salaam, Tanganyika - main subject is an East African Airways Lockheed Lodestar, but what is the a/c in the foreground

Ansons & Consuls were active in the area

Love the youngster in the topee. Whole different world then.

On Ansons - or at least some of them - the structural members from the mainwheels back to the rear of the nacelle looked for all the world like a bit of old RSJ. This seems to be visible in the pic.
Meanwhile, interesting how close the Lodestar's belly is to the ground.

What a brilliant photograph !!! No need to apologise for the quality, the content more than makes up for it. Colonial bush flying at its best. Love the makuti roof on the terminal....

Date is a little later, 1951 or 52. Can't find an exact registration date for -KHY but it was in 51 and it left the register in September 52.

The other a/c is certainly an Anson and as you say a number were active in that part of the world at that time. The Tanganyikan ones had all left the register by 51 so it is likely to be a Kenyan one. The most likely candidate is VP-KHS which was used by Airwork for Tsetse Fly spraying work under contract from the Colonial Office Insecticide Committee. (See Keith McCloskey AIRWORK A History).

Is it definitely Dar es Salaam? Just looks a bit primitive, even for early 50s. A new terminal was opened there in 1956.

Certainly is Dar - remember it well as a kid arriving out there in a BOAC HP Hermes in the early 50s.

If you Google: Handley Page Hermes Dar es Salaam it will take you to a magnificent colour pic where you can easily identify it is the same tower.

The, now defunct, airport where the pics were taken can be seen just south of the National Stadium if you look on Google Earth. Tis possible to make out old runways and the old apron where these pics were taken.

Re Date. yes I now believe it's 1950/51 - VP-KHY was only delivered to East African in 1950

Location is 100% Dar, I was there in late 1954 just as the 'New' airport opened - Dad was an ATCO there, sadly have no recollections of the 'Old' airport - we lived just past the 'New' airport opposite the Ukongwa (Spellling?) Prison, our house was No 2 (below the Water Tower) and had been the Chief Engineers during the construction period

Fortunately by '54 dress standards had changed!!! and I never had to wear a Topee

Thanks for the additional information, guys....

Lived in Kenya in the 50s, sadly never made it to Dar or Zanzibar....

Those were the days...

Well, at least the apron is tarmac.

In the Hermes photo, can anyone explain why some kind of sacking has been draped over the engines of the EAA DC3/C47?

I have spent best part of an afternoon googling for info on old Mkeja Airport when I should perhaps have been doing accounts. The former is far more interesting although not particularly productive!

I would be grateful if anyone can point me to some links - esp with old photos.
