Mosquito over Didcot?

Have I just been hallucinating, or have I just seen a DH Mosquito flying north to south over Didcot in South Oxfordshire?

Planemike 1st Sep 2013 11:26

Worry not, you have were not hallucinating !!!

It was the French built scale replica F-PMOZ: probably returning home having been a visitor to the LAA rally at Sywell.

Viewed ground to air it looks quite convincing. F-PMOZ Sywell 31/8/13 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Thanks Planemike, thought it didn't sound quite right.

I live near Fontenay and have seen the aircraft several times - it is a credit to the guys that built it

tac2ils, I saw exactly the same and nearly fell over! Passed right over our house, we're just up from the Broadway :ok:

Allegedly infringed the Solent CTA; was apparently intercepted and identified by the RN Historic Flight Sea Fury!!

It will not be like the real thing. Handled the Mossie before it left NZ whilst we had it parked up at Tauranga.

it didn't sound quite right
Given that it's reportedly powered by two Lycoming HOAs (hence the unfortunate bulges on the side of the cowlings), it's not altogether surprising that it doesn't sound like a pair of Merlins.

I'm sure I remember hearing of someone making a large scale Mosquito using V12 BMW car engines suitably adapted for aviation. More work than using a couple of ready-made air-cooled jobs, but would give a more satisfactory appearance and sound - though still not the "right" sound of course.

How about a DH 103 Hornet? Engines would be a problem I think.......

So glad I searched for this before posting on Spotters Balcony!
Went right over my garden (by Fleet Meadow Hall) and I couldn't believe it was a Mossie at first!

Parked on the apron at Humberside a couple of weeks ago.
I only realised it was a replica as I got closer and it didn't get to the size it should have been!!! A great effort and deserving of much praise.
