Superb set of photos.
Thanks. |
Tucked in amongst the mostly helicopter pictures section, there's a Mig 15 parked next to a Sabre. I wonder what the history of that picture is.

Hi my father was shore based ( K19 ?)for a while with a Sea Fury squadron at one of the American bases and remembers watching the Sabres coming back from a mission whilst he was waiting to take off on one himself, he says at least two crashed close to the field due to running out of fuel and was told that was quite normal as they were always close to their limit of endurance

IIRC, during the war a North Korean pilot abandoned the Worker's Paradise (tm) for the hedonistic pleasures of capitalism. He took his MiG with him. He forcelanded and an American team went in to recover the aircraft, which now resides in the National Museum of the United States Air Force.
The pilot relocated to the United States after debriefing. These are some really nice pictures, btw. I was just so pleased to see a question I could answer that I overlooked the opportunity to acknowledge that fact. And as an aside, yes, that pilot would be wearing a parka. It was official cold weather flying gear for the USAF, especially in the colder regions such as Alaska, Greenland and Minot, North Dakota. |
Simply fantastic! Thanks for posting.

I know it was cold, but can the guy in the Sabre--photo #5--actually be wearing a fur-lined parka?

Thanks for sharing - great pictures.

Wow, thanks albatross. I've posted the link on a model site I frequent, they'll appreciate it.

I briefly worked with Lt. No when he was assigned to my group - 1981 I think.

One of the Sabres Beuteous Butch 2 now resides in Classic Flyers in Tauranga, was working on it yesterday and was sure I had seen its picture here and sure enough I had. Will print them off and give them to the museum. Thanks for that.

fergineer,
I thought that name looked familiar, but I hadn't got around to checking. The last time I saw her, she was parked at a car dealership on Hewletts Road. Back at the museum now? Here she is at Classic Flyers in 2010: http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...ousButchII.jpg |
