Boscombe Down Aviation Collection

The Boscombe Down Aviation Collection (BDAC) has been "behind the wire" at Boscombe Down until now and therefore effectively closed to the public.

BDAC is now in the process of moving to Old Sarum Airfield and plan to open to the public on Sunday 1st July 2012.

Oh Yes. Highly recommended.
We were there in July.
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Beautiful collection.
One of my favorites as I have lots of hours in the "sweatbox" helicopter version.

And today they have the No.1 HS Hawk XX154 being delivered. My favourite air museum by a long chalk!

With rumours of Old Sarum airfield closing, any ideas on what will become of this excellent collection?

Quemerford 24th Aug 2019 21:21

The museum hangar isn't under threat; it's not included in the development (or not) elsewhere on site.

Good to know it's still there. Drove past it every day when I was based there installing ground station equipment to support Tornado trials. (That was a while ago).

I think they already are grade 2 listed, unfortunately that doesn't bring funding for repairs hence the state they are in.

WIDN62 25th Aug 2019 12:42

Just to clarify the situation!
The 2 hangars occupied by BDAC are listed and are owned by a private individual who has nothing to do with the airfield or its management. This owner looks after the hangars very well and they are in excellent condition considering their age. BDAC therefore will continue in its present form even if the airfield does close.
The 2 hangars that are in disrepair are the responsibility of the airfield management.

That's good to know.A few years ago, maybe 2010? I was a lorry driver and had a delivery to a bus company in a hangar alongside the aircraft collection.
I had a good look around the hangar and was told the hangar was in poor condition.

WIDN62 27th Aug 2019 22:58

Yes, when the bus company moved on, BDAC did a lot of work inside the hangar and the landlord fixed all the external problems - roof, gutters, etc.
