Vulcan over Lyneham

They have had a test flight of the Vulcan this morning. It made a great sight making a lazy 45 degree bank to line up. I know that some think that its not as exciting in its display as it used to be but its still an awesome aircraft.

Actually, just seen on the news, it was "goodbye to Lyneham". Another impact of the, soon to come, closure of the airfield. At this rate its going to get very quiet up there soon.

"It made a great sight making a lazy 45 degree bank to line up"

A 45 degree turn in an aircraft that size is far from lazy!

BEagle 29th Mar 2011 21:00

45° angle of bank is no problem whatsoever to a Vulcan, I can assure you - it is certainly 'lazy'.

It was, in fact, the normal angle of bank we used for the 'evasive' bombing attack at 350KIAS.....and 300 ft.

A visual run-in-and-break might well include overbanking to about 110° bank in the circuit.

The Vulcan is assuredly not some plodding airliner!

Sorry, been out to long - 30 degrees is as much as we allow otherwise the pax start twittering about how they nearly died as the aircraft "rolled onto its back"!

Indeed - anyone who has done 'fighter affil' with a Vulcan will have seen a lot more that 45 degrees at 30,000' +

Vulcan final flight

Saw the tin triangle pass overhead whilst sat out having my lunch, and later heard that was the final flight.

Is that really it? :{

last flight from Lyneham, she's now based at Doncaster (Finningley)

Recommend the Vulcan thread in Aviation History Forum.

As I recall, one of the mandatory Instrument Rating items for Vulcan pilots was a 45° steep turn at M0.84 and FL410...

I've been above FL500 at well over 45° AoB watching F-4s vainly trying to achieve a missile solution. During a trip to CFB Chatham, after the F-101 had 'fired' its rather unsporting Genie, in the visual merge we ended up tracking him happily in his 6 o' clock. The tape they played afterwards was hilarious "How did you let something that big get behind us?" was the radar observer's comment!

Did you never make it above Fl 600 BEagle?

Shaggy Sheep Driver 30th Mar 2011 11:57

110 degrees? Pah! I have a vid of 'Roly' Falk barrel-rolling one the full 360 degrees at Farnborough! :ok:

Finningley Boy 30th Mar 2011 21:42

I have somewhere, some footage, not of Roly Falk, but of operational crews flying LABS manoeuvres over Farnborough in Vulcans and Victors, circa 1958 to 1962!:ok:
