Kiwi Air Force Vulcan Bomber

The kiwi's 'had' a Vulcan Bomber in the early 1970's and I got photos of it on my blog at;

Top Birds & Everyfing

I dug these photos out of a box in the roof after I bought a scanner. There's lots of other stuff in there too!

In the 1960s and early 1970s just about every overseas station had a dayglo "zapp" that would be found on your aeroplane in the morning.

Some people used to get quite aerated about the practice and insist that the offending article was removed before take-off.

Personally, I used to ignore them and by the time I got back to base I would probably have picked up four or five of them. At least it helped to remind me where I had been over the last week or so.

I think Muharraq used to slap a palm tree on and one unit had the rear end of a cat with the ar*ehole cut out (Sharjah or Masirah)?

The habit to me lay somewhere between "innocent fun" and "high spirits".

Edit: Thinking about it, I think the Masirah zapp was a turtle so Sharjah would have been the cat's ar*e. No doubt someone will put me right within the hour!

Having been stuck at RAAF Pearce for a few days, one of 899's Sea Vixens was duly zapped: no-one was too worried, so the roundels were left in place all the way back to Yeovilton :cool:

Then there was the USMC F4 that was comprehensively repainted while in Malta, and sent home as an 892 lookalike. The bosses aircraft, he also liked it enough to take it home to CONUS :D

In my days out East it was customary to zap RAAF aircraft by adding a ball and chain to the kangaroo's leg. The Ozzies didn't like it for some reason.

Many years later, long after I'd returned to civilian life, a RAAF Canberra came through Bandar Seri Begawan and parked overnight outside our hangar. In the morning it had the customary ball and chain. When it returned from Manila a couple of days later the kangaroo had been paroled, so I put another shackle on it for the return to Darwhine. :)
