What wing?

I found some old slides from my dad. One slide I came across shows a wing, but I cannot figure out to what airplane type it belongs to. The picture was taken about 40 years ago. Any experts out there? :)

It looks like a twin piston judging by the wing structure between the inner/outer flap. The aileron/flap mix is not the same as a DC3 but it does look like the C20/C46.
That's my bet.

HEATHROW DIRECTOR 16th Jul 2010 09:30

Going completely the other way - Comet 4B? That panel looks very much like the red panel on the BEA Comets.

sycamore 16th Jul 2010 09:57

Or a Caravelle ?

chevvron 16th Jul 2010 10:02

I agree with HD; it's the wrong shape for a Caravelle and the surface looks too smooth for a piston aircraft, plus the static discharge line and what looks like fuel vent on the trailing edge look right for a Comet.

more leads?

Thank you for your replies. I found another picture, not sure if it is related to the first one. It shows the cabin, don't know if it is any help.

Yellow Sun 16th Jul 2010 11:13

It doesn't look at all like a Comet to this old Nimrod pilot.

Groundloop 16th Jul 2010 11:26

Definitely a swept wing jet but not a Comet. No wing tanks so could then only be a 4B - but the 4B has an enormous wing fence running across the full span - and Comets do not have slotted flaps.

thetimesreader84 16th Jul 2010 12:01

Boeing 737. Probably -200, given the apparant age.

Of course, I could be wrong...

oxenos 16th Jul 2010 12:28

I agree with yellow sun - Comet / Nimrod had no spoilers either. I think Times reader is correct. Interior shot also looks like 737.

twochai 16th Jul 2010 12:30

Fokker F-28, I'd venture.

RampTramp 16th Jul 2010 12:40

Not an F28 twochai, I think they're all 2+2 or max 2+3. I'd go along with Tmesreader, an early model B737.

AndoniP 16th Jul 2010 13:09

trident? BAC 1-11?

Tyres O'Flaherty 16th Jul 2010 17:07

Certainly looks like an older 737 wing to me

MReyn24050 16th Jul 2010 17:41

I would suggest it is a Boeing 727 perhaps. See the link:-

This is an early 727 cabin:-

con-pilot 16th Jul 2010 18:35

I'm with MReyn, it is a 727 wing. The angle of sweep back of the wing is not that evident because of the angle of the camera when the picture was taken.

As for the interior shot, looks like a standard Boeing cabin, 707, 727 or 737 cabin to me.

Brian Abraham 17th Jul 2010 01:08

Hand up for 727 here. High speed aileron between inner and outer spoiler panels, and the wing sweep evident between the two groups of spoilers.

Postfade 21st Jul 2010 21:28

I think your probably correct with the 727...but I'll leave it to you pilots to prove it.

Here's the wing of the Boeing 727 demonstrator N7003U when it visited Paya Lebar, Singapore in 1963.

I think this interior shot clinches it though.

I think we can discount the Trident; (with thanks to Mr Rick Skoroszewski)

On the other hand, as MReyn24050 said, the B727; (with thanks to Mohammadreza Farhadi Aref)

Scroll down to see some very interesting pics of N7003U's 1963 world tour.

Thanks 'forget' for that link concerning the B727 I showed. Because you PPRuners like to see cockpits....here's the 727 N7003U's.

And because you like to have a challenge as well....here's a shot of N7003U taking off from Paya Lebar during that October 1963 demonstration tour, with an interesting aircraft on the apron.

Globemaster !

The Globemaster, star of the original "Italian Job" film, Paul H.

pdscott 24th Jul 2010 18:20

Globemaster had a much deeper fuselage than the a/c shown in the pic.

It appears to have a canopy on top of the fuselage.

A wild shot in the dark, is it some obscure French, or Italian creation.

kitwe 24th Jul 2010 18:31

Globemaster

It's a C74 Globemaster 1. The one you are thinking of is the C124 Globemaster 2.

norwich 24th Jul 2010 21:07

David. I see a Boeing 727  a C74 Globemaster  and yes the very interesting British United Airways DC-6A .... G-APNO or G-APNP ????

Keith.

Postfade 27th Jul 2010 20:59

Yes, those that spotted it as a C-74 Globemaster 1 are correct. It was HP367 'Hercules' of Air Systems Panama.
Paul H pointed out the connection to the movie and Keith I knew would know about this one...because I culled some info from an old FlyPast forum post of his....
<<There were only three civil C 74s, all operated by "Air Systems, Panama" 42-65404, N3182G, HP-385, crashed Marseilles October 1963.
42-65408, N8199H, HP-367, dismantled Milan August 1972.
42-65409, N3181G, HP-379, salvaged Turin September 1970.
I am sure you all know HP-379 "starred" in the Michael Caine film "The Italian Job" and yes it is the one with the built in freight loading elevator in the hull ! >>
I remember in 'The Italian Job' it was pretending to be some obscure Chinese plane.
I added some Globemaster II photos to one of my posts on my website awhile back...but they were US Military ones of course. The C-74 wasn't made in such vast quantities...only 14 built.
