Interesting Photos
Dear all,

Not quite Mr W. These are thumb-nails. Go to 'Edit' your post. On all of the photo URLs delete the 'th_'
Try that. You'll also need to align the photographs in Photobucket. Go to Photobucket, click on each photograph in turn. Along the top control bar you'll see 'Rotate'. Do the necessary. Also 'Resize' your pics to 'Large' so they dont spill across the screen. I'll delete my post when you've cracked it. |

Those are extremely interesting Mr Wiggly. Thanks for persevering, it was well worth the effort!
The Birmingham-Elmdon tower is pretty obvious. With the aid of various Air-Britain publications I can make a few comments: J7143 is a Vickers Vimy Ambulance that served at Hinaidi, near Baghdad. It was later rebuilt out there as a Vernon but was written off when it crashed into a hangar after an engine failed at 100ft on take-off on 26.7.26. The DH 9a was also based at Hinaidi. The inverted Tiger has a GP code that probably indicates Gosport. The Tiger in the street looks like it has a GP code on the fin as well. The bent Seafire was with 778 Sqn. The unit's bases were Gosport from 8/45 then to Ford Jan 46 then Tangmere July 47 and Lee-on-Solent from May 48, disbandedAug 48. I don't know the area well enough to suggest which airfield it might be. The one in the undergrowth is a Barracuda. I'm sure someone else will come up with more and better gen! |
Wigglyamps, It would be good for all of us if you go into photobucket and resize the pics to 800 x 640 or so and as someone said before to use the rotate tool to square them. Its hard to turn ones' head through 90 deg.

The Tiger Moth crash in the street I am certain is BB865 of Station Flight Gosport coded "501/GJ" which crashed 7.11.50 at Ryde,Isle of Wight. It had been performing aerobatics over Elmfield area Ryde ,failed to recover from a low level loop and hit telegraph wires at "The Kyles" High Park Road. As the aircraft crashed a lampost and telegraph pole arrested its path. The pilot was Lt Edward Kierman an experienced pilot with 900 hours and the passenger was a civilian airframe engineer from Westland Aircraft Ltd both sadly being killed.

The aerial crash shot looks like the same Barracuda as in your previous selection. It has Gosport's postwar fin code "GJ".

Re Tiger Moth crash. You are probably right. Just a brief mention in the national press as below: 8th November 1950 A Tiger Moth training aircraft from Gosport crashed in the road between two houses at Ryde, Isle of Wight, yesterday, its two occupants being killed instantly. |
