Lancaster ED823 - Appeal for Information
On behalf of a local historian, we are seeking relatives of the aircrew of Avro Lancaster ED823 of 1661 Heavy Conversion Unit, which crashed at Halam, Nottinghamshire on 9th April 1943.
The gentleman in question is seeking information, photos, etc. The aim is eventually to erect a memorial in the village, or close to the crash site to commemorate the aircrew. The crew were: 411919 Flight Sergeant Leonard Wentworth LEAN RAAF (Pilot) Aged 22 Son of Samuel Francis and Elsie May Lean, of Lindfield, New South Wales, Australia. 14855 Sergeant Frank DUNKIN RAAF (Flight Engineer) Aged 21 Son of George and Henrietta Dunkin, of Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. 127064 Flying Officer Edward LAMBERT (Navigator) Aged 34 Son of William and Margaret Lambert; husband of Lavinia Lambert, of Bolton. 1087359 Sergeant Henry Utley OXSPRING (Bomb Aimer) Aged 27 Son of Joseph Henry Utley Oxspring and Florence Oxspring, of Hoyland Common. 1345277 Sergeant William Shearer Lindsay GRAHAM (Wireless Operator) Aged 20 Son of Robert and May Graham, of Maryhill, Glasgow. R/115799 Flight Sergeant Raymond David LEWIS RCAF (Air Gunner) Aged 22 Son of Bertram W. Lewis and Anna B. Lewis, of Melfort, Saskatchewan, Canada. 1231524 Sergeant William George STEPHENSON (Air Gunner) Aged 21 Buried Leicester (Gilroes) Cemetery.
