They've found the black boxes, reported to be "damaged". Not surprising considering the size of the hole it made.

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Iran plane black boxes 'damaged'

With all the Pprune members on here hopefully somebody can post a link to some wreckage photos. From the grainy stuff in the local papers here I have a keen interest in looking more closely at the rather roundish part of the rear end of an engine laying in a field.

RoyHudd 16th Jul 2009 15:35

Not much interest displayed in this news. Has any hard information been released by the Iranian Aviation Authority?

Best photos I've seen yet are on the BBC's website

the BBC's statement that somehow US sanctions can be linked to this crash is UTTERLY outrageous!
Agree 100%

Nothing has stopped Airbus from from providing equipment, and in a market with little competition either.

Maintenance of Russian-built aircraft has been notorious for bogus parts provided by shady suppliers who have become proficient in forging tech docs
And the FAA has a huge problem with "bogus" parts as well.

Last estimates of the unapproved parts market involved a figure in excess of $1.5bn US (parts under FAA jurisdiction).

Old School Flyer

Thanks for the pics as posted above

The 4th photo down seems to show a streaming fire over a leading edge surface ?

Does anybody know what this is?

TioPablo 16th Jul 2009 18:11

Well, you'll find your answer, as much as is known now, in the AP article in your/our "national newspaper": five.

"Most of the passengers were Iranians, many of them from Iran's large ethnic Armenian community, as well as 11 members of Iran's national youth judo team. Five Armenian citizens were among the dead, Armenia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement, along with two Georgians, including a staffer from the Caucasus nation's embassy in Yerevan."

This looks like a turbine case with a liberated turbine disc. (note the flower petal fractures around the circumference).
Lots happening during a prang like this...simply an observation, not a conclusion.

Iranian Aircraft Down 15/07/2009

A Caspian Airlines Tupolev TU-154M, registration EP-CPG performing flight RV-7908
The CVR of the TU154 was found in area close to accident segment and try to read it...

aerotransport.org 4th Jun 2011 15:54

Edit - forget it - this is indeed the Il-76 AWACS whose radome separated and broke off the vertical tail

barit1 4th Jun 2011 16:25

Reported elsewhere as a midair between an Il-76 and a IIAF F-5E preparing for a ceremonial flyby over Tehran. See here

Smoketrails 4th Jun 2011 21:44

I had my doubts that the crashing a/c was a TU-154 when I saw the clip! Very plausible!
