Nightbomber Film

Apologies if this has been posted before...I tried a search, honest!

I last saw this several years ago on Channel 4 in the UK, and have tried to find it several times since. I happened to find a link earlier and thought others may be interested.

Night Bombers Video Documentary at FactualTV

Starts with an advert, but the film is all period colour and almost an hour long. Watched only a few minutes so far. It all looks so recent.

Cheers!

Vitesse: Fabulous, and on VE Day!
Thanks!

Never seen it myself before. One of the best factuals IMHO.

Thanks for posting it.

It's available on DVD from Eureka.

Excellent video, thanks for the link!

I was fascinated to see FIDO in use - I'd just read Arthur Clarke's account of the development of the radar-controlled landing systems in Glide Path, which also describes FIDO, so it was very interesting to see it actually operating.

Glad the film has been both entertaining and instructional!

It makes a change from the more familiar sequences that seem to get recycled in modern documentaries.

Now I just need to find the elusive Buccaneer at Red Flag and I will be entirely happy.

Cheers!

Excellent documentary! Also worth reading from rear gunner POV:

Vitesse,
Thanks so much for posting the link - really great film which serves to illustrate again how much we owe to all of the aircrew involved

Available from A*****n @ £12.48 although currently out of stock - just ordered mine :)

papajuliet 10th May 2009 15:24

And I paid over £49.00 for the video about 33 years ago!

Vitesse 10th May 2009 18:31

Thanks for the thanks!

Looking at the Amazon reviews, it seems the film was only declassified in the late 70's, apparently due to the electronics.

My problem in finding it was that I forgot the title...

Can barely imagine Videos being at £49! As a youngster, I desperately wanted Pink Floyd's The Wall, but at that price, no way!

I desperately wanted Pink Floyd's The Wall
A man of impeccable taste!

3rd best album, after DSOTM and WYWH.

I got my copy from the visitors centre at Metheringham airfield, Lincs. Seemed right to support a small but good museum on a former FIDO Lanc airfield!

..and that was when videos were in their infancy and 'supply and demand' ruled. I also have a copy that I paid a premium for, but would sell sell it for a fraction of that price, so am open to offers?

Avitor 13th May 2009 13:29

I am grateful to be given the opportunity to see it. It's a wonderful tribute to some very brave young people.
Thanks for finding it.

Nightbomber was filmed " on Location":ok: by a serving RAF officer.
He used a Bell and Howell cinecamera he had bought in the US so very early colour.

Well put together:ok:

thanks, amazing film, what a generation

XV490 14th May 2009 16:29

The chap who made the film is profiled here. He looks distinctly pi55ed off with the tinsel stunt, poor sod.
