Any info on Radlett airfield
Hi All
I was just wondering if anyone can share info on Radlett airfield. I know that Handley Page were based here and made the HP42 and Jetstream aircraft. Searching the web did not show many results but I did find this web site :- http://www.handleypage.com/Menu_page.html I also found this site showing the run down state that the site had deteriorated to :- http://www.controltowers.co.uk/R/Radlett.htm Now the old site has the M25 running through it and an aggregates company is now based on whats left. Apart from the above, does anyone have anymore info that they can provide ? thanks in advance |

I remember passing it one sunday on a train in about '61. My brother was on his way to Cardington for pre entry training prior to going to Cosford and my dad and I went as far as Bedford with him for a day out. There were several Victors parked there near the hangar, PLUS a Halifax nose section on the north side, presumably the one that's now in the IWM

There are plans to turn the old airfield into a rail freight interchange. The locals are not happy at all about this idea.

I expect they would rather it be re-opened as an aerodrome. :E

The Strategic Rail Freight Interchange has just been the subject of a public enquiry. We await the Inspector's recommendation to see whether the government are minded to encourage the development of rail freight which has fairly good green credentials and can only help the wider trunk road network by removing a fair amount of long distance lorries from our roads.
Saying that, the Radlett proposals are not ideal and the effect on our local Hertfordshire roads might be a problem. DeepC |
I used to work in Flight Test at the Park Street end.
I seem to recollect there was some talk of having a railway stop on the line adjoining the airfield that ran down to London. It would have been, probably, quite easy to set up a 'mini' terminal to launch regional aircraft from there. Can't honestly recall where the story came from but in hindsight it would have probably made good sense - especially for the quiet generation of regional aircraft + bizjets now extant. Railway sidings sound much more fun for the genteel folk of Radlett Village! |
