L-18c with ALAT
Hi.
I`ve recently bought a share in a Piper Cub, PA-18-95. Back in the -50s it served with the french army aviation also called ALAT. I have tried to search the internet for pictures of how our aircraft was painted, but with no luck. Are there anyone with some links or pictures of L-18c which served ALAT? Or anyone with lists of the links between aircraft serial number and military codes? Answears would be appreciated. :) Best Regards, PA-18 Norway |

Thanks a lot so far..
Anyone know who might have information about military codes aft on the fuselage vs construction number? Best regards, PA-18 |
PA-18
Can you let us know what these markings are and then perhaps we can advise? What is the constructor's number of the aircraft of which you are a part owner?
|
The serialnumber is 18-1342.
USAAF PI-51-15342 PA-18 |
I am not quite sure what you are referring too?
Anyone know who might have information about military codes aft on the fuselage vs construction number? C/N 18-1342 is the Piper construction number for that build of aeroplane. This aircraft I believe became the property of the Luftsportgruppe in Ravensburg in Apr 1971 as D-EAEQ. It was later registered LN-NAV 21st May 1975. |
That is correct, MReyn24050. We know the civil history of our plane, but its the french paintscheme`s which are the most appealing to us. Thats were the challange starts. Exact markings of the aircraft would be marvelous to have. :-) But we don`t know if it has been in Algeria or in France.
But again, thanks so far in this puzzle. Best Regards, PA-18 |
French Codes
The following link and subsequent pages explains the system of codes used by the French Army in respect of these aircraft. Unfortunately it is in French but I am sure you could get a translation.

ALAT
pa-18,
I once co owned a Super cub which was ex ALAT (French Army Air Arm in English). We were given permission by the French to put it back into it's Mil colours. We went to The museum at Dax to research it and to authenticate the colour scheme. Although we had a super cub I am sure the scheme would be very similar to yours. I will try to dig out a pic and send it to you. |
ancientaviator62, that would be nice.
Are there any photos of this aircraft on the web? Best Regards, PA18 |
pa-18,
struggling to find the pics, they must be in the loft so will look this weekend. I do not know where you live but 'our' cub was last seen at Breighton with thr Real Aeroplane Co. Might be worth a look if you are close. Also there was a small pic of it on their website. |
Im living in Norway so its a bit to travel. :-)
But your cub looked good, indeed. Best Regards, PA-18 |
pa-18,
apologies for the delay in posting but i had my flu jab and it seemed to react. I have looked in the loft but the photos elude me. But what I did find was a copy of the report on our cub written for the OCT 98 EDITION of Pilot magazine. If you would like this I can send you the article which has about a dozen pics of the cub. |
ancientaviator62,
that would be great. Check PM. pa-18 |
PA-18,
I have replied via e- mail and will keep looking for the pics. They may have gone the way of a lot of my Hercules AAR and airdrop pics, lost in the various moves whilst in the RAF. |
Hello again.
I have`nt got an email from you. Could you please try to send it again? It would be great to have that article in hand. Best regards, PA-18 |

Only history I have.
