General Albert Boyd

Hello everyone

Since a few years now I am doing a lot of research about pilots that established outright speed records. One of them is Albert Boyd who in 1947 established a new record for the United States. He was flying the Lockheed XP-80R 'Racey' to a top speed of 623.85 mph above Muroc Field.
On the internet I found his biography but it would be very useful if someone would have some additional details about this particularly speed flight or some pictures to share. Maybe an aviation magazine already published some material?
Many thanks for your help,

Bart

G'day Bart

I'm not sure how much gen you have on the actual record-setting flight itself, so forgive me if the following is old news to you.

The flight took place at Muroc Dry Lake, California later to be known as Edwards Air Force Base. The actual speed attained was 623.738 miles per hour. A Lockheed XF-80B prototype (U.S.A.A.F. s/n 44- 85200) was modified for the event and re-designated the XP-80R. It was fitted with an Allison J-33-A-23 turbojet engine with a dry thrust rating increased to 4,600 pounds of static thrust. The aircraft was also fitted with a smaller canopy. It flew with no drop tanks, minimum fuel and no weapons.

The aircraft is now displayed at the USAF useum, Wright Patterson AFB at Dayton, Ohio.

I have a photo of Boyd climbing into the cockpit of the XP-80R if you are interested.

Cheers...Chris
