Tell me you wouldn't kick this out of bed?!

Bob DeFord's full-size Spitfire MkIX replica, flying at the Prescott Air Fair last month.

Any idea what engine/prop they are using?

treadigraph 29th Oct 2004 13:38

Think I saw on Flypast (hello Daz!) that it's an Allison...

Final 3 Greens 29th Oct 2004 16:59

I wonder why they used a 3 bladed prop on such a lovely replica?

AFAIK all MkIX were 4 bladers.

treadigraph 29th Oct 2004 23:12

If it is an Allison up front, can't think of any that ever spun more than a three blade prop...

Think finals is correct about all Spit IXs having four blades. Best looking Merlin mark in this humble burgher's opinion. But the real thing in preference...

MkVIII 30th Oct 2004 09:54

NO WAY JOSE! Best looking mark was the Mk VIII (hence my name).

All the grace and elegance of the Mk IX, but with the GORGEOUS pointed rudder, and retractable tailwheel.

ALL Mk IX's had 4 bladed propellors. That particular replica does have an Allison.

I guess it's half decent, but, if it's not circa pre-1945, it doesn't count :p

Well if nobody else wants it, can I have it? Who cares about 3 or 4 blades, what a stunner, please Santa, I've been very (sort of) good this year.

3-blade prop...

...comes from a DC-3 ;)
