Unidentified Aeroplane
Not really Aviation History and Nostalgia but.....
Last night overflying my house was a twin engined aeroplane with two very long probes sticking out the front. One on the nose and one from alongside the cockpit. It was about the same size as a PC3 Orion but with only two engines. Any ideas what it was? DeepC |
I recently saw an RAF Andover which looked a bit like that, crossing the M5 not far from Kemble.
I thought it might be used for calibration of Nav aids but I am probably wrong. |
Was it low wing or high wing? T tail or low tail? Prop or jet?
|
Low Wing, Low Tail, Twin Prop.

Could be a Boscombe Andover if they have not scrapped them all by now. As an aside, as your location is given as Tempsford, Beds, do you know anything about an SOE museum at the airfield. Opening times / websites etc if the answer is yes. I flew over it recently and a fellow crew mate mentioned it coincidently whilst I am plodding through the book "we landed by moonlight".

The SOE museum is not quite as posh as it sounds. It is more a memorial to the SOE people and the pilots who flew them.
It is at Gibralter Barn. Built in the war to look like an old barn. Still has the racks where the agents pcked up their kit from. Very good. It is on private land. If you come to Tempsford, I'll show you where it is. PM if you want any more info. DeepC Take a look at this Tempsford Airfield Web Page Andover looks about right. If some one could confirm that it is currently fitted with two probes then QED. Andover C.1 DeepC |
