I believe that the first photo is of the Miles Hawk Speed Six. Several years ago I was at Booker when the new owner was trying to start it prior to the flight to its new home at Fairoaks. Watching the procedings was an elderly gentleman who was offering a few words of advice to the pilot.
It turned out that this gentleman was Ron Paine, who had bought the aircraft when new (1935?) had stored it in a London garage during the war and had competed in several Kings Cup races in the 50's. In 1950 he set the 100km speed record for the class. He was one of the founders of Derby Airways. We spent over an hour chatting about the aircraft and his flying adventures while the new owner tried (unsuccessfully) to get it started. I would love to know if Mr Paine is still alive. a search on the internet only shows a reference to him in 2001. I have some photos of him standing next to DGP at Booker, but I don't have the technical ability to publish them. Airclues |

Airclues, unless I am mistaken, the latest Aeroplane Monthly reports that Ron Paine sadly died recently. I'm sure John Maynard talks at length in his column about this distinguished gentleman. |

Wish that Jeremy would NOT brim over with enthusiasm so much, positively drove my guests round the bend with his constant prattle. My guests were all willing (including the ladies) to take his microphone and place it where it would hurt with his overworked and tedious reference to the Lysander (makes me wince just to write the name now!)
Please, we don't need someone trying to be a poor man's version of a local radio station announcer. Especially when he was joined by the even more enthusiastic girl for the air race commentary. Oh! to have John Blake (correct name?) back. His tone and depth of knowledge were ideal for the genteel garden party atmosphere of Shuttleworth. Whinge over... The aeroplanes and flying were wonderful as usual. |
Just had a great time in enjoying your pictures. Every single aircraft was surely worth the trip.

Keith, nice to meet you at Duxford yesterday. I managed to dig out another Hind shot where you can be seen - I can't see your grin, but I'm sure it's there.
