Just been reading the obit and have been prompted to buy a copy of his autobiography "From Tailhooker to Mudmover".
RIP Dick.
Just read his obit.
Great Pilot. I was on Ark when he caught that perfect 3 wire but the deck was pitching so badly that his gear was wrecked.
Dick and Chumly (another Royal Navy pilot I'm just using his phonetic callsign as I haven't asked him if I can use his name) were graduates of the RN AWI school who went to Miramar on exchange with the USN. They set up Top Gun.
History at Top Gun is now being rewritten to remove any suggestion that the FAA was involved. What a shame and a disservice to a great aviator.
