Here is a read only link to the Aerodrome Database - WhichAerodrome.xlsx. Up to date as of 1/5/2019. Catching up slowly - up to May 2019 now (Mar 2020).

Here are some "rules" for Which Aerodrome. These are based upon the original suggestions from the very first thread, and have a few additions. Also please be patient as when you are active others may be asleep.
  • A historic picture of an aerodrome will be posted. Newer pictures are allowed but the theme here is to compare/contrast old with new as well as identifying aerodromes which no longer exist.
  • The person who correctly identifies it will be declared the 'winner' by the original poster.
  • That winner shall either post another challenge or declare the floor open. Anyone may then post the next challenge.
  • If the winner of the challenge does not respond to the notification of their success within 48 hours, an Open house can be declared when there is consensus between multiple other posters which are on line.
  • When the poster of a challenge does not respond within 48 hours of a posted answer, this poster can be declared winner if the answer is considered correct in a consensus of multiple other posters.
  • If Open House is declared, regular posters should not jump in immediately, but time should be given for those who are not great at naming the correct location as they may have some good images.
  • There will only be one challenge running at a time.
  • Try to use elderly photos and not Google Earth, Zoom Earth or any other search engine, pics
  • Try to post images that are not already present on internet, as Google Image Search will find them if they are.
  • Personal photos are acceptable as they show the aerodrome as it is now.
  • When confirming the correct location, the location and winner should be stated to negate any deletion of posts.
  • Please don't delete your posts, let everyone see your successes, failures and challenges.
Anyone can edit it so long as they have been here for 90 days with 90 posts. Let's get consensus before changing and not go crazy Thanks to Self Loading Bear for suggesting that we use a wiki. Which Aerodrome I Which Aerodrome II nvubu.

Flap40,

Too hilly for HLP. Jakarta is basically built on a mangrove swamp and is rapidly sinking into it!

India 42 is correct - the Dutch learnt little from the Amsterdam experiment when they went to the East Indies! I watched the flooding in 2013 from my 39 th floor apartment and could see the extent of Jakarta which is effectively below sea level.

Back to the challenge: . In addition to the Asian city link there is also a link to Germany and Britain in the next Century.

STILL NO TAKERS?

The local area name contains a cardinal point reference as does the name of the wider governance area.

Hi mgahan, when you say there's a link to Germany and Britain in the next century, do you mean the 22nd century, or the century after the one in which there was the link to another Asian city? Hope that rather convoluted question makes sense

Yes, makes sense and I was going to clarify later today.

The link to the Asian city is in the 18th Century and the links to Germany and Britain in the 19th.

My first thought is that it's got something to do with the Hanoverians. I know BA 747's used to operate trooping flights to Germany, but I've been to Hanover and it didn't look much like that when I was there. I think I might well be barking up the wrong tree here!

Barking up the wrong tree? Well that could be the start of another clue: trees and language spoken in a city in Italy many, many years ago but that area would be a distance from this airport although the airport could be used for international access.

A simpler clue would be to say the Britain clue relates to royalty.
MJG

I do have a layout drawing for Holy Saturday, if the challenge goes that long. as there is also a Christianity link to the city which is served by the airport.

Regarding the cardinal points in the local area name and the wider governance area: Western Cape in South Africa? Could it be Cape Town? Although I've no idea how the other clues fit in! I need to sleep and then work so I'll find out a lot later today if I'm barking up the correct tree this time...

You are in the correct hemisphere. You have both of the cardinal points correct.and both relate, but in different senses to the difference in latitude or longitude between Capetown and the city served by this airport.

Enjoy the sleep. I'm signing off in an hour or so here in my COVID-19 case free Kiribati environment to have a few beers before we run out!

Wrong way folk: head South and East if you want to find the airport in question.

Go back and look at the hills in the BA picture..

Evans is closer but too far in one direction and the wrong way in the other. He may have also used the obvious airfield feature in one of the pictures to situate the regulatory regime.

Darwin could fit some of the clues: Charles of that name was active in Britain in the 19th century. There are cardinal points in the names of the territory (Northern Territories) and the country (Australia: 'Australis' being Latin for 'Southern'). But MJG has already told us that the cardinal points are West and South.

I'm confused and probably barking up another incorrect tree!

Getting closer.
Ignore the Boeing in the second picture and connect the background and foreground.

I'll post the historic layout picture tomorrow (on Holy Day which will satisfy the Christian connection)..

MJG
Collation of clues; This city has an early connection with a city in Asia, and a German and British connection in the very early days. These is still a very strong German connection. Cardinal points in local and wider area names (West and South) also give clues to geographic location with respect to Capetown (although one is direct and the other is reversed). . "trees" and language from long ago in Italy could provide a clue as the city may also be an international connection to an area associated with those thoughts. .
