I was thinking Curtis Shrike but that was a 2 seater... I'm sure I've seen this one........ the Turner-Laird LTR-14 looks similar but the engine doesn't seem right

Perhaps the Supermarine 224?

I think it is an inverted in-line engine like Gipsy Major?
several types come close like Miles Falcon or Hawk but then the cockpit is wrong .
I cannot make a stab but I am correct on the engine?

Neither of those.

It is not a well-known name.

Designed and made by a university.

edit: first flew 1933

Kyu-Te Model 5 Secondary Glider ?

The Kyu-Te Model 5 Secondary Glider "Aso-go" was designed and built by the shipbuilding faculty of the University of Kyushu; called at the time "Kyushu Teikoku Daigaku" (Imperial Kyushu University) and therefore the "Kyu-Te" part of the name. The only example of the type, with the civilian designation J-BCYH, started to be built in early June 1933 and was completed in the middle of August of the same year.
