What's that? Is it the hotly contested Spratly Island of Itu Abu, aka Taiping (Taipingdao) ?

Bri,

"Close but no cigar"

Yes, it is one of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea (or Trung Sa Islands in the Eastern Sea as we say here in Vietnam), but not Itu Abu. Only another "147 islets" to search

Wink

You are both right, but evansb got there first.

Spratly Island, the largest island in the group that is occupied by Vietnam. Other islands and reefs are occupied by China, Taiwan, Philippines, Brunei and Malaysia.

This whole disputed area is a maze of reefs, some not charted. It is justifiably marked on Admiralty charts as "Dangerous Grounds". The main shipping lanes are just to the west of this map, in very deep water.

Over to you, bri.

Has the feel of a smoke jumper or fire bomber base to me. My guess would be western US or Canada.
