Only other early airfields I know in that area were Leysdown and Kingsnorth but I think they were gasbags only.

When I say in the right part of the country I mean north and south of the River Thames.

Well it looks like Essex countryside like you get surrounding the A127, but I can't think of an early airfield in this area.

Not Stow Maries.

I have just had a closer look at where this aerodrome was located.
It is now listed in Greater London. I hope I have not mislead you but you are on the right track !

Right chaps,

You are all in the right area.

Clue : A very old veteran who died recently started his Military career here.

That should do it !!

Clive... sorry Clint.

Henry Allingham started his military life at Chingford as an Air Mechanic 2nd Class.
So maybe RNAS Chingford.

OPEN HOUSE if correct as an early walk to the pub seems to be in order. Crackling fire, foaming ale...... ahhh

handsfree.

Correct.

RNAS Chingford. 1915.

Although the aerodrome was closed in 1919 it continued to be used for National Aviation Days until about 1932.

In 1935 it was demolished to make way for the William Girling Reservoir which is still in use today.

Henry Allingham, (6-6-1896 -- 18-7-09) did start his Naval career here.

handsfree has declared open house.

Clint.

I can see the similarity with the sand pits but Broxbourne was long closed when this phot was taken in 1977

OBP,

I wasn't sure about that. I used to go fishing there when I was a kid. Good roach and bream - not many aeroplanes though.
