Friends gave me "The Complete National Geographic Magazine" on CD which covers 109 years through the 1990s. I'm not sure it is still available.
The January 1926 magazine has a 61-page article titled On the Trail of the Air Mail by Lt J Parker Van Zandt of the US Army Air Service. It includes 68 photographs, a few of bent machines. This was written at a time that there was an effort to avoid transfer of the Air Mail service to commercial operators.
Edited to fix syntax.

What a shame that Capt Jepp is not alive to see the re-enactment of his pioneering days. For those that haven't read the Capt. Jeppesen story, I suggest you check their website. How great things came from a little black book.
