The answer to your question is yes, I hope that was the state before the overhaul.
Did you scan that from page 199 of Mason's book? Did you notice the wheels?!
(Thunderball - Wouldn't the interior of the Avro Vulcan still be on the "secret list" in 1965?)

Could it be the Focke Wulf (S) 39B ?? I've found one photo without a Townend ring and it looks very similar.
One only built in 1932 and then sold to the Soviet Union. Fitted with a Seimens Sh 22B Jupiter

This machine was designed to compete with the He 46 but proved too unstable
I think the engine is a Siemens-Halske.
