USAF Thorpe Abbots , Norfolk

Would anybody have any historical accounts/ pictures as my grandfather is re-tracing his war years?

Much appreciated,

Also have a look at 'Airfields of the Eighth - Then and Now' published by After the Battle; written by Roger Freeman.

You should visit the airfield. The restored control tower and surrounding buildings are quite stunning and convey quite an atmosphere.

Thorpe Abbotts tower museum

Revisited the 100th Bomb Group control tower museum at the weekend - what an absolutely splendid place, full of atmosphere.

How they keep it free admission is beyond me.

...while you're at it, get him to spell 'Abbotts' properly, too.

Norwich,

Please adjust the size of your pics. They must be 850x850 or 850x724 - the size you have them laterally spreads the page. Not good - thanks.

Thanks for the adjustments.

Norwich, lovely pictures,I live a couple of miles away, often visit in my old car and fly over in the old L4 Cub.
There are still some US servicemen visiting who served there ,but less each year, although sometimes pilots from Lakenheath and Mildenhall turn up,often their relatives were based there.
Large pictures are better than no pictures.

Always amazed at how clean and smart everything looks, and how well turned out everybody is. At minute 22.45 if you look at the top radar screen which is essentially in fast forward, there is a B-17 return! The town they flew past with a lake is probably Diss.

Amazing, thank you. I shall take my little boys there in the summer.

I know Thorpe Abbotts really well, it is only a mile or so from where I live. The museum is excellent and well worth visiting if you are in the area.

I have taken hundreds of photos of the airfield and they are all on the AiX forum here Thorpe Abbotts

If you are after any photos in particular, let me know and I will see if I can dig any out.

Along similar lines to Thorpe Abbotts - Back in the late 70's we would often fly in to Seething - being also a former USAAF airfield that operated B24 Liberators that flew many missions over Germany and occupied Europe.

The club (could have been Wavenley ) made us feel most welcome on every visit. The original control tower had been retained and at that time
served as a mini museum. Well worth a visit - assuming it is still open and active.
