Sorry, not the Hughes H-1. The mystery aircraft is from the 1950s.

More hints: The aircraft lost out on a design competition for the U.S. armed forces. Only 20 were produced, most going to the Saudia Arabian Air Force. Only 3 aircraft remain, all on the U.S. registry.

Many thanks, that was a great challenge. I apologise for the quality of this photograph but I am sure it will not last as long as yours.

Based on the elaborate canopy, and vertical bracing, is it the little known Belgian Renard R-32?

There is no beating you. Well done, it is indeed the Renard R-32.
The single prototype R-32 was sold to the Spanish Republicans, but remained in Belgium.

You have control.

Thanks Mel. That R-32 looks a bit like a Lysander. Here is one somewhat newer and not as rare.

This aircraft first flew in 1956. Over 600 were produced.
The engine is American, but the airframe was designed and built elsewhere.

If it is correct, which I am sure it is, then please take the honour of submitting the next challenge.

Yes Mel, you are correct! The original prototype was actually built in Spain.

You are more than welcome. I think I know this one but will let someone else have a chance. Although I am probably miles away from being correct.
