Best Civil Aviation Museum in UK
Hi all,
I have trawled the internet for hours without real success. I would like to know if there is a good civil aviation museum in the UK, and obviously where it is?
Kind Regards,
Andy

Hello Andy...........
Welcome to the Forum. No one else as stepped up to the plate so here goes. In truth, there really isn't a "civil only" museum in Britain. The civil aircraft that have been preserved are spread across nearly every collection in the UK.

Delhi - Palam
Spent an hour or so at the Indian Air Force Museum at Palam last week. Unfortunately I only had the Blackberry to snap shots with . It has lots of interesting stuff - almost exclusively non-US but sadly the exhibits are in poor condition and suffer from the indian habit of hand-painting everything! There also seems to be a virus there - the "Flat Nose Wheel" virus!!!!! Neverthe less it was enjoyable, with the likes of Spitfire, Hurricane, Lysander, Hunter, Mystere IVA, Ouragan (Toofani), MI-4, MIG23 and MIG-25 and more .... Here is the Foxbat...

VMAP Fort Worth Texas
A small museum in north Texas worth looking at is the VMAP, Veterans Memorial Air Park located just south of Meacham airport. The fellows are pulling together aircraft from the area to be put on display. Several smaller museums joined forces to make a worth while contribution to the public.

For something completely different
Check out the WWII Assault Glider museum:
Lubbock - Silent Wings Museum
This is the same collection that I visited at the Terrell TX airport (E of Dallas) in the late 80s.

New hangar at MoTaT
Went to visit the Museum of Transport and Technology's new hangar in AKL recently, whilst going up to see Roger Waters in concert (Pink floyd Fans, anyone?). The hangar's an impressive building and has enabled MoTaT to place a greater number of its aeroplanes on public display, but photography is made difficult due to low lighting.
Please excuse the poor results due to my low budget equipment.
Lancaster. Just because it's a night bomber, why do they have to plunge the thing into darkness all the time???
Mosquito.
Vampire.
Rapide.
Fox Moth.
Fletcher Fu-24.
Tui Sport, wee homebuilt.
Cliff Tait's AESL Air Tourer in which he flew round the world.
Gemini, Ceres and Fletcher.
P-40.
A rather blurry A-4.
Hudson.
Harvard.
More soon.

More from MoTaT.
Electra.
AT-11 Kansan.
Outside are a few airframes that are suffering a bit due to the weather.
Sunderland and Solent.
Sunderland.
DC-3.
Ventura.
Solent.
The gate guard is a Hurricane reproduction built for the movie Battle of Britain
and is in the markings of AVM Keith Park's aircraft. The MoTaT 2 site is known as the Sir Keith Park Memorial Airfield, although it used to be a rubbish dump.
A memorial to a Corsair flight lost during WW2.
That's all for now, folks.

Hinkler Hall of Aviation
Hello everyone
In writing my book on Bert Hinkler - FAI gold medal winner 1929 - I visited many of the great aviation museums in the world - RAF Hendon, Brooklands, Smithsonian, RAAF Point Cook, New Zealand Fighter Pilots at Wanaka, Australian War Memorial, Science Museum in London.
I have to say that none surpassed the Hinkler Hall of Aviation in Bundaberg when it came to promoting the legacy of the great aviators of the Golden Age.
If you are ever in Queensland it is a must see museum. It recently acquired Hinkler's Avro Baby in which he set world records in 1920 and 1921. Amazing what he achieved ina tiny machine with less power than a modern motorbike

Western Antique and Automobile Museum - Oregon
I don't think it's been mentioned thus far, but there are 70+ a/c at the Western Antique and Automobile Museum at Ken Jernstedt airfield, just south of the town of Hood River in Oregon, USA. Access is via the Columbia River Highway, an hour or so east of Portland. Many of the a/c are airworthy and flown and this museum well merits a visit.

The Museum of Army Flying, Middle Wallop
I served at Middle Wallop in the early 70's and visited this great little museum last month. The visit was unplanned and consequently I was unprepared and my camera batteries ran out about half way round but I managed to take a few photo's,

The Museum of Army Flying, Middle Wallop
The ML Utility which carried out unsuccessful evaluation trials at Middle Wallop with 6 Flight A.A.C. in 1960. It was however the fore runner of the Ultra Light having a high efficiency canvas and nylon wing

The Museum of Army Flying, Middle Wallop
The General Aircraft GAL 48 Hotspur training glider.
Although originally conceived as an "assault" glider which necessitated a compact design, a change in tactical philosophy predicated against the use of small numbers of troops being sent into battle aboard gliders. Due to limitations in its design, the Hotspur was mainly relegated to training where it excelled and became the basic trainer for the glider schools that were formed.
