Book Search

Hi
Does anyone know the title of a book released in the past three years about Canadian and British Aircrews who were interned in S IRELAND 1939-1945.
Any help would be greatfully accepted.

Don't know if this is the film DamienB is refering to but I read recently a story about POWs interned in Ireland. All nationalities and a fairly jovial sort of affair. An American flying over to Europe, didn't quite make it and ended up getting interned. He subsequently escaped (not a difficult feat) and made it to his unit, only to be told the Air Force was quite unhappy with him and he had to go back to Ireland.

His frustration stemmed from being all fired up to go to war and felling like a malingerer being stuck in Ireland. However, it was considered inportant for Ireland to remain neytral and interning servicemen from both sides was a way of showing the neutrality, so his sojourn there was another, albeit unsung, part of the overall war effort.

I think I read this in a colour supplement a while back. The article mentioned they were thinking of making a film of the event. There was something to do with a train set as well if I mremember correctly.

Bit older than that, 1994, but you can still get hold of it from Amazon or Allbooks , but it will cost you an arm and a leg.

Guests of the State: The Story of Allied & Axis Servicemen Interned in Ireland During World War II
by T. Ryle Dwyer
Publisher: Irish Books & Media; (November 1994)
ISBN: 0863221823

There is another one, from 1996, about a couple of RAF aircrew:

Grounded in Eire: The Story of Two RAF Fliers Interned in Ireland During World War II
by Ralph Keefer
Hardcover 308 pages (1996)
Publisher: McGill-Queen's University Press; ISBN: 0773511423
You can buy it second hand from Amazon UK here.

It was reissued in 2002:
Hardcover: 280 pages ; Dimensions (in inches): 1.08 x 9.04 x 6.32
Publisher: McGill-Queens University Press; (January 2002)
ISBN: 0773511423

and you can get it at Amazon USA here.
