HAPPY CENTENARY TO "OUR AIRLINE"....
For Monday 16th Nov. 2020.......
HAPPY CENTENARY to QANTAS, and to the Guys 'n Gals, who are no doubt hoping for a much better year in 2021. Still one of the world's oldest airlines....and one of the safest. Cheers... |
Happy Centenary Charlie Q
I intend to celebrate the day by reading the last two chapters of Elizabeth Fysh's wonderful book "When Chairmen were Patriots", the story of Sir Fergus McMaster and the other founders of Qantas. While they didn't have to contend with a pandemic, for there were no airlines to speak of when the previous pandemic struck in 1918, they did have to contend with the Great Depression and their aeroplanes being shot down.

I'm going to celebrate by taking QF32 out of its display case above my bed and reading it yet again. The incredible story of a single pilot a380 avoiding disaster. Inspirational.

I wish there was a like button :-)

Nice sentiment and worthy of recognition but the qantas we have now is a papery thin facade compared to the one that started 100 years ago. It was the staff who made it and corporate stupidity that has gutted an otherwise fine symbol of the Australian spirit. Good luck to anyone remaining, it’s going to be a crappy ride from here on in.

hardly our airline or national airline
|
Still for a lot of Australians its something they feel proud of that the national airline is 100 years old. One thing that you can say about Qantas is that it has always been run as an airline and not anyone elses plaything like poor old Ansett or Virgin. That I think is the key to its success.

It a private company & before that it was the very dodgy public service. Not national airline anymore than Virgin, Rex, Alliance or any other australian airline. Nothing at all special about qantas. |

An annoyingly reliable response from the Great Australian Know Nothing general public. The accumulated skill , knowledge, intellectual capital, operational experience etc.etc. is a vital strategic asset and national icon, pure and simple. Like the automotive industry you let it go and you will regret it for eternity. Congratulations QF |
Happy birthday QANTAS!
There are lots of us lifers who despair at where the airline is going these days. We're still proud to have been part of it though. Before I retired I had 52.5 years of service in a large number of roles. I was lucky enough to be flying in the "Good Old Days" before anyone had a camera and a mobile phone. Thank God!!! We got up to lots of mischief! We flew hard and partied hard but, in my experience, were always professional - serious when we needed to be and relaxed when appropriate. |
"Our"? Yeah right!

Happy birthday Qantas. And to all those above denigrating it, it is still a wonderful company and I am sure most of us left are still proud to wear its uniform.
Despite the many naysayers who are loud and proud to post negative thoughts, there are many who never bother to post...until today...who still love the red tail and long may it fly. |

The book referenced in post #2 quotes a revealing anecdote about Fergus McMaster. Apparently he was given a Golden Casket ticket which won a prize but he didn't collect it because he felt that he hadn't done anything to earn it.
Feel free to extrapolate that to today. |
