A Better Farewell
 

With all the Australians stuck overseas and trying to get back, would it not have been more of a farewell flight if a 747 did a flight or two to Sth America up the west coast to the USA and Canada and back to Oz picking up Aussies as it went along as a gesture of goodwill to all the Australians who have supported Qantas over the years instead of jollies around Oz.

QF could have done the same through Asia and Europe.

How come other airlines are flying pax into Oz while our "national airline" has canned all international flights?

well the gov must be really good friends people at those airlines to subsidise them and the aussies on welfare at home

Are you suggesting QF should operate services at a loss during a pandemic where they’re already not generating any income?

I can tell you the charter flights to Australia are certainly not operating at a loss!!!

Alan could pay for that 747 trip out of his pocket. He raked in $90+ million 2015-19. That ought to cover it. What a fantastic gesture that would be. Those folks still call Australia home.

Because in some cases they were physically unable to, military curfews imposed and borders closed with literally no notice in some cases.

Plus I know many people living overseas, and I can tell you now, they don’t expect the government to pay for their lifestyle abroad....

QF aren’t doing the 747 farewell totally for free, the hour long Brisbane farewell sold $100,00 worth of seats. $747 J and $400 Y class Tickets for the hour long flight, and the Prime Time publicity would be worth a lot more than that.

With profit from the flights donated to HARS and QFOM.

Well, that is a nice gesture for sure, well done QF.

I don't expect expats to free load on the Govt or QF.
With the overseas airlines asking people to upgrade to business at inflated prices, it would have been great publicity for QF to do what I suggested with all economy seating in a 747.

People remember being ripped off and will spread that far and wide, but will also award brownie points for corporate goodwill.

The same with the passengers from the cruise ships in Perth who needed to get to the eastern states. Why didn't either airline have aircraft on the ground in Perth as they had a captive audience with a known release date from quarantine and, with a bit of coordination with the cruise companies, where passengers would need to fly to.

People do not seem to think laterally any more.

We have friends who were in the Philippines when the borders suddenly closed - their return tickets for April with Cebu were cancelled, and no refund yet. They have bought tickets for a November flight home, but that has been cancelled too, and no refund. They can't afford to keep buying tickets, having to pay rent on their property in OZ and also pay for accommodation over there, and no income.

A sweep-up flight from Qantas would be nice. But they are not holding their breath, behind their Covid masks.

The airlines flying into Australia are not flying profitability. Most flights have just a few passengers on them. They're flying valuable cargo. Some airlines, like Qatar - are taking advantage of their 'closed books' business by using this opportunity to market themselves. They're flying all over the world to 'get you home'. It is a branding exercise for them.


Delta airlines released their quarterly results yesterday. Some US$5.7b loss. Let that sink in...

I would have thought that considering the age of the b747, there would be spares galore and plenty of people who know how to maintain the beast. Given the pandemic, might it be useful to keep a few around for mercy missions for a while?
