Air NZ rosters

Hello Everyone,

How are the rosters offered in the airline for an A320 FO and Turboprop Captain ?
And is their any monthly roster patterns you can choose from ?

Would really appreciate some detailed information.

Thanks

In the props we have an amazing rostering system called Crewbid, it rosters you nothing you ask for 100% of the time. Currently Mt Cook has a fortnightly roster and Air Nelson has a 28 day roster. Depends on who you ask as to what is better. Some like knowing what they’re doing 28 days in advance, others like the flexibility of a fortnightly roster to not have to plan so far in advance, however we will all be going to a 28 day roster once we join airlines. No flexibility with your roster in terms of choosing to work month on month off or fortnight on fortnight off. There are limits on how many double overnights you will be able to carry out unless you give your permission to do more. Also, it’s very base specific on how many overnights you will do, some bases get hammered with overnights, some with day duties. Will probably get worse in the next 6 months as the company adds capacity to the Jetstar Regional routes, and the company starts asking us to come back from annual leave and days off to work. However, you do get remunerated if you decide to work on AL or a day off. Overall, if they could sort out Crewbid the rosters would be pretty good

While that is currently true for the TP fleet... the proposed, combined collective agreement offers "Flexi-Flying" options. Whether the proposed CA is ratified or not will be known in the next day or so (voting closes Oct 2 @ midday).

And this isn't always true... I got a 6am sim slot that "matched" my "early sign off" bid!! :ugh:

My “bid satisfaction” on the jets last two rosters = 0%

It’s all about how you bid. I’m very junior, yet mange at least 90% bid satisfaction. From my experience some people’s bids are poorly thought out and would be contractually non compliant. Generically bidding as broadly as you can seems to work. Too many bids and it throws its toys out and gives up.

Having said that the new sodomiser does produce some interesting rosters, with days off often grouped at one end of the roster , meaning 3 weeks of only single days off at the other end.

I don't think you need to worry too much about how the 320 rosters work for some time. Providing you have the right to work in New Zealand you'll need to be planning on how the roster works for an FO at either Cook or Nelson.

From what i understand i can join Directly on Regional as a Turbo prop Captain or on a A320 FO . If their comes a Vacancy for the same right?
how is the life and work balance ?

I think what he’s saying is the company has put the brakes on jet recruitment big time (rightly or wrongly) and if you were successful at interview now you’d be on hold for quite a while.

Actually my fleet still needs additional pilots in
my opinion and I think the coming passenger slowdown is overstated anyway

No you cannot join as a turboprop captain.
Entry points to the turbo prop fleet are at the bottom of the seniority list as an FO.
Entry points to the jet fleet are as a second officer or A320 FO. Depending what’s on offer at the time.

But it you must have the right to live and work in NZ. Air New Zealand do not sponsor applications for work visas.

There will be no interviews for and no jet recruitment into Air NZ for the foreseeable future. The company preference now is pilots moving from the regional airline. Another massive expansion will probably see the need for external pilots directly into jet but this is not likely for some time. A turboprop f/o is the only way into Air NZ now.

okey
so what do you suggest?
someone who is a Captain on jet should do in this case 😅
i mean any airline in Australia or New zealand gives Direct Captain jobs or maybe an FO on Jet?
Just wanted to know

thanks

Slezy9 10th Oct 2019 06:05

I think you'll be struggling to find anywhere that does direct entry jet jobs in AU/NZ

Edit: sorry. Meant direct entry jet capt jobs.

kjvmw 10th Oct 2019 06:12

DEC no, but as an FO there are multiple.

mulisector 10th Oct 2019 06:33

Ahh Jetstar Australia have just advertised for direct entry FO on the A320 in Australia.

mattyj 10th Oct 2019 08:26

You’ll definitely get an interview at Airwork for DEC if you have significant 73 left seat time..they’ve been running on just enough for a while now

ka_pai 11th Oct 2019 05:27

Livelife09, Air NZ don’t want to hire anyone into the jet fleet for the foreseeable future, even if you are the Airbus chief pilot. They want to promote within from the turboprop fleets. And they DO NOT hire DEC. AirNZ is a legacy airline that has a seniority list which is king, not a low cost operator that hires low hour DEC Captains. You will find the most junior and ‘inexperienced’ Captains at Air NZ have in excess of 8000hrs total time, which makes them quite experienced by world standards.
I would suggest looking at Asia for a DEC job or an f/o job with Jetstar or Virgin. Good luck.
