I am unreliably informed, the pilot that posted the recent open letter to the CEO of Qantas Airways Limited has been stood down?
Is there truth to this statement? |
Don’t know, but if they did would probably mean more 737 cancellations as they are that short. |
That is the whole problem with this place. Management are only interested in hearing positive feed back. You really stick your kneck out the minute you bring attention to the many easily fixable failings of ‘the group’. |
Sad if true, also if true shows the worth of being a member of the union >99% of that airlines pilots are in. |
I doubt you would be stood down for writing an email. Posting it on social media! Now that could be a problem.

Posting the reply on social media is incredibly stupid. |
Stupid is not the word - naive may be better. Naive to think all things considered, that the ceo or his satellites wouldn’t take exception to fair comment as they have consistently demonstrated that they sit at the militant end of the spectrum. If the allegation is true, how much more evidence is required to illustrate and reiterate to everyone what increasingly looks to be a very clear picture as each day passes... management do not give two sh$ts about you as an individual, or as a collective. Dont let this pilot’s transparent advocacy be forgotten in vain. The allegation if true, bares some semblance to the master in control complex expressed during ww2 by that infamous dictator. |

Those with their heads in the corporate stratosphere value the perception of their own reputation more that anything else. Threaten it and your out, even if you actually do operate in the real rarified air polishing their turds and rolling them in glitter.
Unless you can play their game at their level then taking them on is simply career suicide. Don't believe me? There is a famous Australian media tycoon who is more than well off and just happens to have significant ownership of a popular Australian honey brand which is sold as 100% pure but has recently been found to contain other artificial ingredients. He is currently engaged with a very famous lawyer gagging anyone who wants to question his reputation on the matter. |
We know what happened to the last guy who threw a pie into Joyce’s face! |

True. But sometimes you are the pie and sometimes you are the face. The good captain can stand proud, having thrown the pie that so many probably wish they could throw on that face. Sometimes you have to stand up and say enough Is enough and be damned with the consequences. Should be more of it. |
Anyone not in a Union for legal protection is in my eyes very naieve and/or too tight with their cash. Bludging off their mates’ dues? I don’t know the guy involved but past dues might be looking cheap now. :( Mainline (longhaul) used to have over 99% union membership, maybe down to 97-98% with all the newer management wannabes? ;) Legal protection and company social media rules are lessons here, notwithstanding that AJ is a prick! |

It doesn’t really matter what you want to call it but if the reply of the CEO was to make it out into the public, he should be able to stand behind the reply without having to stand down the Captain. If he is feeling exposed or feels that his reply being made public undermines him, then maybe he needs to look within about how he addresses his employees. Unlikely as he has proven that he likes to rule with an iron fist. The only engagement Mr Joyce is courageous enough to make is either surrounded by CPP (Close personal protection) or lawyers. Gordon Bethune when he became CEO of the beleaguered Continental Airlines, dismissed the security details for senior executives, wedged open the doors to the executive levels of the company and gave his personal telephone number to staff. Rob Fyfe at Air New Zealand made sure senior managers (all of them) worked in various parts of the business on regular intervals. As the author of the email asserted, even Mr Strong personalised a people business, recognising milestones and personal landmarks. To attempt remotely to 'rule' with an iron fist, will work no better than the countless historical figures who tried. What this now has the potential to do is unite the workforce, who know precisely the way Mr Joyce deals with any open critique, to work against senior management. A bigger man would have simply called the email author and invited him down to QCA, sent his security detail out to walk around the block a few times and had a chat.. |

Perhaps Al could name his “From Hero to Zero” |
If Rob Fyfe had a similar situation to this the offending Captain would’ve been made to come to work for a day naked with his uniform painted on. |
Very sad if true.

Heartening to read yesterday how the SH Pilots pulled together in an awesome effort to clear the massive backlog after recent Syd storms. Jump seats accepted, Leave given up, volunteers aplenty..... Well done to all, and wonderful to see efforts genuinely appreciated in a special recognition email. :D |
