Virus on pprune

G'day everyone

I'm a frequent looker at pprune. It appears as though there is a virus. Some links when I click aftera few minutes I get redirected to a draw for s free Ipad/iPhone. Sometimes it says apple free, other times tpg/Optus etc. I'm not even with either carriers.

Does anyone experience the same or similar? It's only pprune

Any thoughts?

fujii 1st Aug 2017 04:55

Yes, i started a thread in the Pacific and General Aviation forum a few weeks ago. No resolution yet. Some solutions were offered. Thread title iPhone.

PPRuNeUser0182 1st Aug 2017 05:54

Same. There's a history of this... looks as if it comes in through embedded content (ie, ads).

It's out of control at the moment.

CurtainTwitcher 1st Aug 2017 06:40

Opera Mini Browser (IOS & Android) may help.

A separate but compatible Opera VPN VPN app (IOS & Android) blocks ads at Opera's own server level. Other installed browsers will also have their traffic directed down this VPN tunnel, so it can be installed independently, however YMMV.

My own experience is this VPN solution blocks that annoying particular ad.

Opera desktop browser
(using it to type this) offers this VPN build right into the browser and can be toggled with the click of a mouse, and several different endpoints (US, Canada, Singapore, Netherlands and Germany). Opera is a customised version of Chromium, which is also the source of google Chrome.

PPRuNe is almost unusable on my iOS devices due to these embedded ad redirects. Would be great if our hosts could get rid of whatever ad provider is causing it!

Jetsbest 1st Aug 2017 09:52

I concur!:hmm::ugh::*

Yep. Complete waste of time trying to use it.

Why they haven't binned the ad provider I'll never know. The silence from admin has been deafening.

Fat lot of good it will be having advertising when everyone gives up on PPrune.

davidclarke 1st Aug 2017 12:01

I down loaded 1Blocker for iOS. It free and takes about 30 seconds to set up.
So far so good, no pop ups. Touch wood...

KRviator 1st Aug 2017 12:54

A quick-but-annoying way to avoid the pop-ads on an iOS device seems to be to let the page load, then immediately refresh it and press the 'X' to stop the entire page reloading. It isn't a long-term solution by any means, but it does mostly work.

Derfred 1st Aug 2017 13:08

If you scroll down to the bottom and select "view full site" it appears to solve the problem. The issue only seems to exist on the "mobile" version of the site. This was reported many months ago in the "computers" sub-forum, so it is not new, but it appears to have resurfaced recently.

Reported to PPRuNe Technical Administration.

IBJoel 1st Aug 2017 17:46

Hi everyone. We work to combat these ads, but we also require help from you. To pinpoint them, it is most helpful if you post a screenshot of the ad/redirect site, and tell us your browser/operating system.

fmcinop 2nd Aug 2017 02:55

On your IOS device turn off Javasript in advanced settings under Safari.

This seems to stop all annoying pop ups whilst on Pprune.

compressor stall 2nd Aug 2017 05:36

Or just select view full site

Fonz121 2nd Aug 2017 06:56

Selecting "View full site" never works on my iPad. Which is annoying because the mobile version is a bit naff really.

Ejector 2nd Aug 2017 07:53

On Android phone as well, gave up looking on PPrune lately, only on a desktop which I don't use much now.

Di_Vosh 2nd Aug 2017 12:21

This is a problem with other bulletin boards as well as Prune.

I've found with the iPad/iPhone I've got to sign in to stop it happening, bit of a pain, sometimes.

DIVOSH!

Here is a screen grab from today. I'm using Chrome 59.0.3071.102 on iOS 10.3.3 on an iPad.

Thanks Phil! Greatly helpful.

fujii 3rd Aug 2017 17:47

I have downloaded and installed Ad Buster from the App Store on my iPad. The ads have stopped.

IBJoel 4th Aug 2017 15:02

Hi all, turns out some of the "Congratulations" ad redirects are triggered by the phone's accelerometer. If a user puts their phone down on a flat, stable surface, the ad will not trigger. Obviously this is not a permanent solution, but it is another line of defense.

apacau 5th Aug 2017 00:34

Adbuster worked a treat! Thanks for the tip!

Hi There, made a capture this morning

You can see it redirects a few times before the final url with the popup
seems the first domain is "honestly.desksuggetion.site"
then redirects to another url
ive also seen "au_ocean.asia.gifttoday.club"

the gif has been uploaded here if the attached gif doesn't work

Only happens in Australia using the mobile site wether using WiFi or the phones 3G.

Only way to stop it on a iPhone / iPad is to go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > JavaScript - toggle OFF
our don't use the mobile site.

Yesterday I downloaded the $1 app for iPhone called "Crystal"
Works out of the box immediately.

It has an option to allow advertising so you can continue to support Pprune.

Also happens outside of Australia viewing the full site on iPad...

Metro man 9th Aug 2017 11:05

Been getting redirected to some dodgy links while browsing JetBlast today. My Trend Micro Antivirus has been working overtime blocking them.

This is the link I'm getting;

https://lifegoalie.com/l/8c579bd6-24...-11506689a78b/

Another one.

LostProperty 10th Aug 2017 04:21

LIfegoalie is a known nasty - don't know about the other one but I would not click on either of these two links. In fact they ought to be removed from the post.

Metro man 10th Aug 2017 06:34

Only put up for the tech team to sort out, don't click on them.

IBJoel 10th Aug 2017 19:04

Thank you guys, these sites have been reported.

wiggy 10th Aug 2017 19:10

Late on parade but as a European I can report it like wot virgin driver said, i.e.

Also happens outside of Australia viewing the full site on iPad...
Started stuffing things up for me last weekend, (Sunday if I remember correctly) and was quite clever in that it kept offering me the aforementioned draw but in our local lingo (French). Seems to have fallen off it's perch about 48 hours ago. Thanks to whoever fixed it because for a while pprune via the iPad was unusable.
