Qantas wants to "domesticate" New Zealand

Qantas wants to domesticate New Zealand ? Travel Weekly

"QANTAS CEO ALAN JOYCE HAS LOBBIED FOR NEW ZEALAND TO BE TREATED AS A DOMESTIC DESTINATION FROM AUSTRALIA.

At the inaugural Talking Tourism luncheon, held as part of the Tourism and Transport Forum’s (TTF) annual conference, Joyce agreed with TTF chief executive Margy Osmond that improvements had to be made on seamless travel to and from Australia’s biggest tourism source market.

“We’ve talked about this for a long time and we haven’t made the progress we should have made,” Joyce said."

It's already a common aviation market but bio-security and immigration issues will be the show-stoppers.

Lookleft 27th Jun 2017 11:27

Trevor Jensen was spruiking the same line when he was at Ansett, Bruce Buchanan was spruiking the same line when he was in charge of jetstar and now Alan Joyce is spruiking it. Its not going to happen for the reasons KB mentioned.

Chris2303 27th Jun 2017 14:42

The only change is that the NZ Government has mentioned that they are in favour but are not ready to pass legislation.

Deano969 27th Jun 2017 19:13

On the finer details, Joyce was unhappy that 737’s – essentially a domestic aircraft – are flying out of Sydney’s international terminal.

“IF WE COULD HAVE THOSE AIRCRAFT COMING TO OUR DOMESTIC TERMINALS WE’D NOT HAVE TO TOW AIRCRAFT BETWEEN THE TWO TERMINALS; NOT HAVE OUR ENGINEERS SPECIALISED ON THAT AIRCRAFT AND NOT HAVING ALL THE EQUIPMENT, CATERING AND RESOURCES DUPLICATED.”

So just pull some 330s out of domestic and add them to the international fleet and rotate them through Asia and NZ
Simple....

Lookleft 27th Jun 2017 23:54

Thats easy then Alan. Turn one of the domestic gates into an international gate and pay for Border Force staff to be present. I think the way Singapore is handled at Canberra would be the model you are looking for. Oh, you want the government to pay for it. Sorry I think user pays is a concept that was started in the 80's.

neville_nobody 28th Jun 2017 02:34

Joyce is right on this issue and it's gone around so many times over the years it's getting ridiculous. I also vaguely recall that the Duty Free Shops have lobbied to keep NZ international over the years.

feueraxt 28th Jun 2017 05:34

Sounds like he wants a trip back in time to 1981.

That seems an odd quote. Given 90% of the Tasman flying is done by Jetconnect who do no domestic flying why would they ever need to tow a JC aircraft between terminals? As to all the other duplication he mentions, well you can add to that having another subsidiary airline, AOC, pilot base, aircraft, contract, etc.
If he wants to reduce duplication across the Tasman, start by rolling Jetconnect into Qantas mainline (while protecting the jobs of the JC crew).

Duty free is a joke these days , cheaper to go to Dan Murphy.
The ques are also long , not enough staff .
Domesticating is a great Idea !

"IF WE COULD HAVE THOSE AIRCRAFT COMING TO OUR DOMESTIC TERMINALS WE’D NOT HAVE TO TOW AIRCRAFT BETWEEN THE TWO TERMINALS".........

If I recall, didn't Sydney Airport Corp offer to allocate the international side to Qantas and the domestic side to Virgin (or vice versa). I believe one or both airlines turned the offer down!

Maybe go and ask for that offer again?

Maybe he wants to expanded the JetConnect empire, and use JetConnects lower cost base within Australia?

Vref+5 29th Jun 2017 02:52

Or then all QF domestic 737 crews are told their base is now NZ, and he can pay them NZ pay rates?

Would never happen...................

How would you manage that one? Unless you're referring to providing SO positions. I don't think you'd find many current SO's or FO's who would agree to them keeping their current rank and fleet if the aircraft were moved back to Australia. I would assume the crew would be subject to the same recruitment process that other group pilots are currently undertaking.

Seems rather unlikely given that JC is reducing to 7 aircraft

cavemanzk 29th Jun 2017 08:04

Could AKL even handle this proposed change? Maybe QF could kick JQ out of there 3 gates and convert to bus. But NZ couldn't do the same, the 9am 777/787 bank to SYD,BNE,MEL would be horried from that Terminal with Bus Ops

haughtney1 29th Jun 2017 08:14

Let's not forget the real elephant in the room, politics, given the current zeal with which Ozzie politicians are pursuing their isolationist or nationalist narrative there'd be very little will to truly "domesticate" trans-Tasman services loaded with dole bludging kiwis. Of course from a kiwi perspective it'd be great, they could fly over..do their grocery shopping at coles or woolies and fly back....saving a fortune on their weekly shop.

Oh god bless his little Irish cotton socks, we are not the EU, so he probably doesn't understand Australian immigration law:
You cannot enter Australia if you have breached certain laws, and will be deported if you do so in Australia (just google the Kiwis who are sitting in Immigration Detention Centres around Australia and on Christmas Island - you will see them all waiting to be deported for crimes committed on Australian soil).
There are laws prohibiting people from places such as New Zealand entering Australia if they are criminals - that will definitely not change.
You cannot have an open border (or 'domestification of flights') whilst these laws exist.
They are there for a reason, and should be there.
Any person flying from New Zealand should be subject to vetting, as with any other country. As they do to Australians visiting their country.
This will never change (unless we become one country, which will never happen).

maybe Alan could push for NZ becoming part of Oz, as allowed for in the constitution, only politics is standing in the way
