Qantas MEL & ADL to Kangaroo Island

"Qantas to offer direct flights to Kangaroo Island from Adelaide and Melbourne"
Qantas to offer direct flights to Kangaroo Island from Adelaide and Melbourne - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

dijical 5th Jun 2017 05:50

"The airline will offer five flights a week from Adelaide over the peak summer months, reducing to three flights a week after Easter.

There will be two flights a week from Melbourne but only during the height of tourist season from December 17 to January 28."

Qantaslink keeps nibbling into REX territory. How many Dash 8 Q300 do they still operate?

maggot 5th Jun 2017 06:35

Dang i thought it was KL, as in Malaysia

Going Nowhere 5th Jun 2017 07:03

Dijical,

Currently 10 Q300's based in Aus, plus 3 Q200's.

2 x Q300's are based in ADL.

Kiwiconehead 5th Jun 2017 20:24

Didnt they try this before?

Salty? Compare their 2005 statements to their 2017 statement.

31 October 2005:
South Australia’s largest regional airline and Australia’s largest independent regional airline, Regional Express (Rex) has welcomed Qantas’s decision to bring Qantaslink to South Australia following the cessation of services by Airlines of South Australia and Emu Airways.

“Rex has always believed in the benefits competition brings to airline services and the commencement of services to Port Lincoln and Kingscote by Qantaslink will fill the gap left by ASA’s and Emu’s withdrawal,” Rex’s Managing Director Geoff Breust said.

8 November 2005:
Regional Express (Rex) has announced it has increased its schedule of flights between Adelaide and Kingscote on Kangaroo Island with an early morning service and additional services as required.

4 June 2017:
Make a statement on Channel Seven News that that they have permanently discontinued five weekly return flights.(Presumably the early morning flights they added in 2005)

Captahab 4th Dec 2017 05:27

I wonder who will pay for the security.

They will probably expect REX to share the cost :=

Good luck with that idea !

And by KI I thought King Island .....

Someone did some years back - REX I think ML - KSC - ML.

Low routes V200 & W475 were established for that reason, used briefly I think, then just left on the charts.

It was actually QLink, with a Dash 8-100.

First attempt at ADL-PLO

They ran the aircraft MEL-KGC-ADL to swap it out from memory.

Another subsidy................

QantasLink will offer direct flights to Kangaroo Island from Adelaide and Melbourne from December in a boost for the island's tourism industry.

The airline will offer five flights a week from Adelaide over the peak summer months, reducing to three flights a week after Easter.
There will be two flights a week from Melbourne but only during the height of tourist season from December 17 to January 28.

The South Australian Government will support the new flights in a joint tourism marketing arrangement between Qantas and the SA Tourism Commission.

SA Premier Jay Weatherill said the island was often the number one Australian icon on recognition lists for Chinese tourists. "This will allow the fantastic Qantas network to be able to promote Kangaroo Island directly and also to do that with their international partners though the One World network," he said. "This is very much the arrowhead for South Australian tourism. Come to Kangaroo Island and then explore the other things."

An $18-million upgrade of the Kingscote Airport is due to be completed in November.

Qantas to offer 20,000 seats a year

QantasLink will offer 20,000 seats a year on its new Kangaroo Island routes, using a 50-seat Dash 8 Q300 and 74-seat Q400 aircraft. It ceased flying to the island 12 years ago but QantasLink chief executive officer John Gissling was confident the latest service would remain. "The investments in infrastructure, accommodation and all things going on in Kangaroo Island gives us enormous confidence," he said. "This is about co-marketing a jewel on the Australian map using our enormous networks, our One World partners and our key partnerships such as Emirates and our Chinese operators to really get Kangaroo Island on the map.

The SA Government said the island received 138,000 overnight visitors in the past year, with about half from SA, 22 per cent from interstate, and 29 per cent from overseas.
The airline will compete with existing air services offered by Regional Express (Rex) and the SeaLink ferry service.

SA Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said the service was not "about cutting someone's piece of the pie. This is about growing the pie and making sure we get more people from right around the world to this "

And of course its nothing to do with the now marginal seat of Mawson since KI has been lumped in with Bignells area of Hackham etc. in the latest boundary shuffle.

Anyone would think there was an election coming soon in SA
