Melbourne to get new airport?!?!

Melbourne may get a new airport soon. The city’s south east region of Koo Wee Rup is being considered to serve as Melbourne’s new airport.

A pledge has been made to identify the land, which could cost up to $5 billion, in the next five years by the Andrews Government. The new airport is a supplementary addition to the principal international airport at Tullamarine and the secondary option at Avalon.

According to Melbourne Airport spokeswoman Carly Dixon, the south east of Victoria would serve as a preferred location to construct the new airport. “With long-term considerations such as land ownership, noise contours, flight paths and market access all to consider, we’re very supportive of moves to start that safeguarding process within the scope of this latest update to Plan Melbourne,” Dixon said.

Additionally, Melbourne’s new airport would cater to a third of the state’s population. It will also be located close to some of the popular tourist attractions like Phillip Island and the Mornington Peninsula.

The airport comes as a significant part of the government’s Plan Melbourne 2017-2050. “Melbourne Airport and Avalon Airport still have capacity to take more flights, but nevertheless we won’t make the same mistakes Sydney has made,” a spokesman for Planning Minister Richard Wynne said. “We need to plan ahead for aviation to avoid being blindsided as Victoria grows.”

Melbourne, Essendon, (ghost town) and Avalon, and they need another?

azure70 15th Mar 2017 23:43

Avalon is only 50km from the CBD.
If the government stopped pussy footing around and built a dedicated fast rail link to Avalon it would be much more appealing for airlines and travellers.
Why spend billions on a new airport?

underfire 15th Mar 2017 23:55

or a rail link to ANY airport.

What, the M1 highway with an 80km speed limit isnt good enough?

azure70 16th Mar 2017 00:04

Having used rail connections to Sydney and Brisbane airport i find them much more appealing than an expensive cab ride or getting gouged exorbitant fees for airport parking.
Sydney Airport raked in $100 million last financial year from parking fees alone.
Yes railways are horrible, noisy, environmentally unsustainable creatures...How is the coal mining industry going in PA?

PoppaJo 16th Mar 2017 00:15

Yes we really need a third airport..

azure70: when one looks around, travels around the world on modern, well built, maintained railways they are hardly horrible, noisy, environmentally unsustainable creatures.

Down here similar to all our old, very old, poorly maintained infrastructure; Yes!

Essendon, (ghost town)
I would hypothesis that this is all about Essendon. I wonder how much the entire airport as integrated residential real estate development would be worth? This would appear to be a giant real estate deal.

Look at the latest CLARA proposal for the high speed train. The proposal is worth $30 billion to be funded by VALUE CAPTURE. The whole point is to bypass existing cities where possible for greenfield site (CLARA have already purchased options over, sorry too late to get in on the game). After you read through GREEN FIELDS AND BLUE SKY Is Nick Cleary’s ambitious CLARA project the answer to Australia’s fast-rail question? BY PADDY MANNING it's hard not to see a real estate deal behind every press release.

put the rail down the middle of the highway, the corridor already exists.

Make branches and stations to local areas.

At MEL, who owns the parking lots in the area, the taxi companies, and the buses from Southern Cross?

azure70 16th Mar 2017 03:25

Easy fix...
Shut Essendon and make a killing from the real estate deal.
High speed rail to Avalon.
Redevelop Mangalore (YMNG) as an International Airport with a high speed rail link to Melbourne.

Great place for a BIG battery pack

neville_nobody 16th Mar 2017 22:11

How many of the current YMEN users will be prepared to move down SE? YMEN is a good central location and the last thing we need is the likes of PolAir, Air Ambulance moving into YMML which will just mean more delays and chaos for everybody.
All well and good to have airports out of town however people have to be prepared to use them.
For large International Airports it's works but for mixed GA, location close to a CBD is paramount.

Great in theory but in practice?? Airport rail links are an opportunity for extreme gouging through outrageous pricing!!

Brisbane Airport rail link to the City is around $30, or $10 more to go triple the distance to the Gold Coast. And whilst Brisbane Airport is only 50 minutes drive from the Gold Coast (in non peak periods), the train trip from Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast takes over 1 hour 45 minutes.

I heard the Sydney Airport rail link is also outrageously priced!

"I heard the Sydney Airport rail link is also outrageously priced!"

Has to be Taily, they have to cover the cost of rent McBank charges for the stations under the terminals.

Back in the late 70's, early 80's my father along with Roger Meridue and Keith Hatfield were asked along with some personal from the local council's to look at possible location of an airport in the south east region and Monomeith was settled upon, there is an old WW2 airfield there that was made for US bombers but never made operational, They flew up to about 7000 feet and the runways could be clearly seen under the grass. The runway alignments take into consideration the high ground in the vicinity apparently.
The council personal at the time wanted it to be located at Clyde but my father, Rog. etc knew that that area would be built up in years to come and would impinge on any future airport there.
This is certainly nothing new- http://www.invest.vic.gov.au/news-an...ias-south-east -stating that it is a pledge by the Andrews government seems to me to be just a perpetual run of plans and announcements dating back some 40yrs!
I guess it will have to happen sooner or later given the growth of Melbourne.

Think Labor Goverment, CFMEU, DeSalination Plant and your money!:rolleyes:

No think the redevelopment of Melbourne Airport
- which will severely inhibit operations from Essendon Airport
- so the "melbourne club" gets together and creates something that can be sold to the people
- that solves Lyle Strambi's problem (how do I get rid of Essendon) and Lyndsay Fox's problem (How can I turn Essendon into an industrial estate)
- and all with taxpayers money!

It's so simple and so beautiful

cattletruck 17th Mar 2017 10:47

When interest rates go up and the property bubble bursts we will see through the veneer of all those housing developer's easy money schemes. Hopefully Essendon survives until then.

With respect to Koo Wee Rup - has anyone asked the cows how they feel about being buzzed by a 737 to get off the runway. Moo I didn't think so.

Sounds like State Government spin to me as a rail link to YMEL would make much more sense.

Falling Leaf 18th Mar 2017 01:57

the train trip from Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast takes over 1 hour 45 minutes.
And for an added bonus it doesn't actually get you to the Gold Coast. Well not the part that anyone would actually want to go to.

Can't see how a rail link to Melton Airfield will help. :)
