I wonder what aircraft they will use.

I saw part of a TV news item on this tonight. A 747 was mentioned but I'm not sure in what context.

compressor stall 26th Oct 2016 10:33

Hmm, where could a 747 presumably full of milk and fuel park and take off from in Tassie? The HB runway expansion doesn't seem to be running to schedule...

Southern handler 26th Oct 2016 12:12

Wasn't Hobart needing a international flight to give the project a go ahead.

RENURPP 26th Oct 2016 19:35

I think there are flights from Hobart to Australia?

chuboy 26th Oct 2016 20:36

There was talk of a 77F running Hobart to China via Brisbane. I expect that is how they will get around the runway length at YMHB.

grrowler 26th Oct 2016 20:56

I heard Qantas are going to do it, hence the new white hats.... :}

Capt Claret 26th Oct 2016 21:15

Geez, pick on Hobart! :}

RWY to be lengthened 500m to allow wide body twins to make Asia with decent load & obviate the need to stop in at the big island for fuel. Support works have commenced but actual RWY extension works have not yet started but will soonish.

International service intent was the requirement to get the project off the ground, as I understand it. :ok:

RENURPP, the mainland of Tasmania services the big island to the north, quite well! :p

logansi 26th Oct 2016 22:45

The flights are expected to start 1Q17 operating 1 weekly Hobart to Ningbo airline not yet selected, assuming it will have to operate via a mainland city for now. Contact is by a Chinese company that just brought out a number of large dairy farms in TAS.

Duck Pilot 27th Oct 2016 01:50

Heard from a reliable source that there maybe a startup operator planning to base a 767 freighter out of Hobart to service China.

Mr.Buzzy 27th Oct 2016 12:34

I look forward to having to pay 10 dollars for a litre of milk.
No, seriously, will Tassie be "value adding" melamine to the product as well?

Seabreeze 27th Oct 2016 12:42

Milk Run

yep...... adds a new meaning to "Milk Run"

Seabreeze

chuboy 27th Oct 2016 12:53

I believe the absence of melamine is the valuable part! Chinese middle class likes the prestige of imported goods and produce.

Eastwest Loco 28th Oct 2016 09:14

Just wait for the first tech problem that requires a close in diversion and landing.

I can just see the headlines. "Air freighter dumps milk over lactose intolerant community". Exceeding Maximum Lactose Weight?

And if we had nuts as external ballast...................:}

Best all

From ch-aviation

01NOV2016
Hobart International Airport in Tasmania could resume scheduled international operations early next year if plans to export locally prodcued milk to China go ahead.

According to Bloomberg, Chinese-backed Moon Lake Investments Pty. acquired Tasmanian dairy producer Van Diemen’s Land Co. in March of this year and has since begun talks with unspecified carriers to start a weekly Ningbo-Hobart cargo service during the first quarter of next year. The service will cater specifically to the dairy market, and may increase to up to 3x weekly if demand warrants it. Beijing Capital may also be added at a later stage.

The Banjo 7th Nov 2016 22:57

I hope the runway extension is to the south. If they want to extend R32 the land acquisitions in Launy and greenie negotiations will take 20 years......,,,

MACH082 8th Nov 2016 00:04

I'm sure they'll milk it for all it's worth.

side map of tassie has become popular.

mustafagander 8th Nov 2016 08:16

Map of Tasmania has ALWAYS been popular. Such a pity it's rarely seen with modern YLs!!

Sorry, I can't resist!!
