What are the initials of this tough training captain and what is he doing now ?

It will be 27 years next month that the first AN A320 arrived in Aust and despite a BNE based AN captain claiming the wings would snap off it has been a popular aircraft with the airline purchasing departments.

Sadly the 3 ferry pilots are deceased.

This is a rumour forum - why would anyone provide the initials ?

Hardly fair on the person concerned.

Keg, of course there is a long involved process through which the chosen ones are put. This "train the trainer" course is, itself, usually run by internally trained trainers. The feedback loop is self confirming and the facade is complete. Like anything that involves appeasing casa (FRMS, SMS, engineering etc.) it's a box ticking exercise and done on the cheap.

No offence to the many great, naturally talented and caring training captains out there, but as a rule Australia is pretty bad at this training stuff.

Working in a multi national environment, I can assure everyone that it's not only Australians who can be bad at this "training stuff".

One of the worst trainers I have ever seen came from a supposedly perfect UK training environment.

So I think there is good and bad in every training organization.

Of course this was a serious error that obviously involved a breakdown in situational awareness. There are lessons to be learned and improvements required, it should be pointed out that there has been much progress in recent years particularly in regards training at Jetstar.

There is also much more information being provided from all levels of the training team and the standard of the trainees graduating these days is a credit to the new direction of the training department. A higher standard is being asked and more resources are is being provided to achieve it. In addition, the shift to an evidence based training model continues.

So seriously, without a hint of rhetoric gordonfvckingramsay, what lessons do we need to learn?

I think Willie has got it right, don't forget this incident happened over 2 years ago! A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then. From what I understand the broom has basically gone through the place since then and both flight operations and training there is a different beast compared to what it was a couple of years ago. Good or bad I don't know but they seem to do an awful lot of sectors these days and you don't hear much about them Incident wise anymore.

I suspected the culprit was a proteges from a previous life. This has been confirmed in a number of private messages to me. I have since castigated the culprit who assures me he is in remission.
